Goldey-Beacom briefly carried over its offensive muscle from Friday into Saturday, but it was too late in a 95-62 loss to the District of Columbia in Newark, DE.
The Firebirds took control of the game in the first quarter, owning a 33-8 lead at the end of the period by shooting 60 percent (12-of-20) from the floor and going 7-for-7 from the foul line. Shanell Haskins scored 11 points in that span with Destiny Ryles adding seven.
Goldey-Beacom in the second quarter found the offensive fire that was on display Friday, when the squad netted 30 points in an 82-73 win over Saint Rose. The Lightning worked their way to the foul line with seven made free throws and netted a pair of 3-pointers in scoring 21 points.
Senior Alanna Speaks (Dover, DE) poured in seven points in the frame with freshman Rory Ciszkowski (Wilmington, DE) adding five.
The Lightning (1-1) also were on the offensive strike in the fourth, netting 22 points by shooting 44 percent (8-of-18) from the field and limiting the Firebirds to only 38 percent (6-of-16). Ciszkowski, in just her second collegiate game, scored nine in the period.
Ciszkowski finished with 14 points off the bench, canning a game-high four 3-pointers. Sophomore Azuri Abraham (Phillipsburg, NJ) poured in 11 points, all in the second half, and Speaks ended with 10.
Ryles poured in 31 points on 12-of-21 shooting, Haskins netted 16 and Kensley Benjamin added 15 for the Firebirds (2-0), who shot 47 percent (33-of-710 from the floor with seven 3-pointers.
Goldey-Beacom on Wednesday visits Southern Connecticut State. Game time is at 5:30 pm.
