Women's Tennis Claims 4-3 Win Over Dominican (NY)

Goldey-Beacom claimed its first win of the season, taking a 4-3 victory in Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference play over Dominican (NY) in Orangeburg, NY.

The Lightning lost out on the doubles point 2-1. Junior Maria Bruno (Maracay, Venezuela) and sophomore Elizabeth Mova (Sevastopol, Ukraine) triumphed over Steffy Espejo and Rupkatha Mukherjee 6-1. Freshmen Jess Sanzo (Bristol, England) and Alex Kepa (Nottingham, England) fell just short, losing their doubles match 6-4.

Despite losing the point, the Lightning came out on top in singles. In No. 2 singles, freshman Zehra Canbaz (Denizli, Turkey) tallied her first win over Bipasha Mehn by retirement. Fellow freshman Hannah Brandl (Neufeld, Austria) claimed the second singles point in a 6-0, 6-0 victory to put the Lightning on top at 2-1.   Bruno and Sanzo fell short in No. 3 and No. 4 singles, with Bruno taking the game to three sets, falling 6-3, 5-7, 5-7 against Mukherjee. This put the Lightning just behind at 3-2. 

Mova grabbed a 6-2, 6-2 victory over Espejo at No. 1 singles to equal match, 3-3. Freshman Elina Mukhamadeeva (Kazan, Russia) claimed the final singles point in a 6-3, 6-1 win in No. 6 singles over Ava O'Brien to give GBC the victory. 

Goldey-Beacom returns home Thursday for Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference play against Chestnut Hill at Delcastle Tennis Center. Matches begin at noon.
