Women’s Soccer Dealt 1-0 Loss by Holy Family in the CACC Tournament Quarterfinals

A day which started with the best news took a downward turn at the end with Goldey-Beacom handed a 1-0 loss by Holy Family in the Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference Tournament quarterfinals, played at Delaware FC in Hockessin, DE.

The news broke early Monday that sophomore forward Alyssa Ruggeri (Hockessin, DE) was named the CACC Player of the Year, one season after she was tabbed the league's Rookie of the Year, first team all-conference and first team CCA All-East Region.  Her numbers more than bore that out with her sitting second in the country with 13 assists, third with 0.81 assists per game, seventh with 37 points, seventh with 2.31 points per contest, 20th with 12 goals and 24th with 0.75 goals per game.

The four vs. five game in any quarterfinal most of the time produces a tight battle and this one did.  Each team produced a solid performance going for every loose ball and did not give an inch.  This came 11 days after they played to a 1-1 in Wilmington, courtesy of a goal from freshman Mariah McQueen (Baltimore, MD) in the 89th minute.

But it was Holy Family that got the only goal.  Stephanie Marino in the 28th minute had the ball and slipped a great pass to Gianna Monaco, who buried a shot inside the left post for her fifth goal of the season.

The defense from the fifth-seeded Tigers (7-5-7) played a major factor, only getting breached for three shots on goal from the fourth-seeded Lightning (9-8-1).  Brianna Pudlo, earlier today picked the league's Goalkeeper of the Year, made three saves.

Sophomore Jennifer Mejia (State College, PA) made five saves for the Lightning.

This ends an outstanding year for Goldey-Beacom in which it made the CACC Tournament for a school-record eighth straight season and were hosting a quarterfinal for the fifth time in its last six seasons.
