Goldey-Beacom Again Takes Part in the NCAA Diversity and Inclusion Week

10/24/2022 12:00:00 AM

Goldey-Beacom College Athletics for the fourth straight year participated in the NCAA's Diversity and Inclusion Week Social Media Campaign, which ran from October 18-20. Each day of the social media series highlighted our student-athletes and shares the impact in the community, classroom and in their sports.

"At Goldey-Beacom, we have one of the most culturally diverse Athletic Departments I've ever seen," said Director of Athletics Jeremy Benoit, who also serves as co-chair for the Athletic Department's Gender Equity and Diversity/Inclusion Committee. "In addition to having a strong showing of racial diversity, nearly 30 percent of the student-athlete body is made up of students who hail from countries outside the United States.  We embrace our multi-cultural and multi-racial makeup because we know that it provides a depth and fruitfulness to our student-athletes' experience that is going to help them excel in their professional lives and become loving and inclusive members of their current - and future - communities."

"We have a very diverse student-athlete population, where students have various religions, cultural beliefs and hail from other nations," Senior Woman Administrator/Associate Director of Athletics/Women's Basketball Coach Bethann Burke said.  "Our student-athletes are inclusive and celebrate their difference, learning and growing from their relationships with each other.  I am very fortunate to interact with all of our students, learning sometimes more from them than they will ever learn from me."

Day one's theme was "Exploring My Identities": exploring student-athletes' intersectional identities, perspectives and experiences.  Day's two's theme was "Allyship is …": defining and highlighting personal examples of allyship to cultivate communities of belonging within athletics.  Day three's theme was "Strength in Unity": outlining collective and institutional action steps for fostering belonging and inclusive excellence.

The NCAA started the Diversity and Inclusion Social Media Campaign as a means to be a week of awareness, education and engagement showing the importance of inclusive environments in college sports.
