Women’s Tennis Unveils 2022 Spring Schedule

1/27/2022 12:00:00 AM

(2021-22 schedule)

Goldey-Beacom's women's tennis team looks to remain among the region's elite against solid opponents as the squad announced its 2022 spring schedule.

The team plays its first four matches at Delcastle Tennis Center, beginning March 15 against Millersville.  The squad then faces Division I Delaware on March 20, West Chester four days later and Southern New Hampshire on April 2.

Goldey-Beacom's near annual matches against Slippery Rock and Indiana (PA) take place on the road April 9 against the former and the next day versus the latter.  GBC then hosts the District of Columbia on April 14 before ending the regular season five days later at Queens (NY).

The Lightning (4-3, 3-3 CACC) had a solid fall campaign in which they won their first three matches and saw two of their losses only come by a 4-3 score.

One of the major reasons for the team's outstanding fall was sophomore Andrea Fresneda (Valencia, Spain), who was named second team All-Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference after going 7-0 in singles and 4-3 in doubles.  Five of her victories came in straight sets and one was an enthralling three-set triumph, the last completed match of the day, over Jefferson in Goldey-Beacom's 4-3 win.

Another key in the fall was the doubles play of sophomore Elin Anderson (Conwy, Wales) and freshman Macy Hendin-Walker (Ipswich, England), who recorded a 6-1 record.  The two provided an impressive and important start to the tie on multiple occasions, getting two victories by 6-0 scores and two by 6-1 triumphs.

Sophomore Imane Van Veen (Paris, France) had a brief fall in going 2-1 in singles, but once again should be a vital part of the unit.  This is after she closed the 2019-20 campaign first team All-CACC, a member of the league's all-tournament team and was ranked 11th in the ITA East Region in singles.

Teaming with Van Veen to go 8-3 in doubles during the 2019-20 season was sophomore Maria Bruno (Maracay, Venezuela).  One of the Lightning's hardest working and most determined players, Bruno has 22 doubles triumphs to her name and once again will be a key factor in big matches.

Goldey-Beacom sports an impressive history with eight trips to the NCAA Tournament, including its 2019 appearance in the "Sweet 16" that saw it end 44th in the country.  The team also has won two CACC titles and has played in the conference final seven times.
