Game Recap: Men's Basketball |

Men’s Basketball Notches Fourth Straight Win, 95-80 over Staten Island

Goldey-Beacom turned a hot-shooting first half for both teams into a strong defensive effort on its part in the second half to record its fourth consecutive victory, 95-80 over Staten Island at the Jones Center in Wilmington, DE.

The first half was not to be believed as Staten Island shot 67 percent (20-of-30) from the field with 14 three-pointers and Goldey-Beacom hit for 51 percent (18-of-35) and nine 3-pointers.  When the dust finally settled, the Dolphins went into the locker room with a 54-46 lead.

But the Lightning (9-7) in the second half took care of business by outscoring the Dolphins 49-26 in shooting 42 percent (13-of-31) from the field with five 3-pointers.  GBC also came up big on defense in limiting the visitors to only 29 percent (7-of-24) shooting and forcing them into 11 turnovers.

Another difference in the second half was a 29-7 run over 12 1/2 minutes that turned a 56-46 GBC deficit into a 73-65 lead with 7:23 left.  Junior Juran Ligonde (Boston, MA) continued his monster play in the post with 11 points in that stretch and helped his side hold the Dolphins to only 3-of-14 shooting.

Ligonde netted a career-best 27 points on 11-of-19 shooting and hauled in 12 rebounds, one short of his career-best, for his third double-double of the season.  The reigning Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference Player of the Week is averaging 19.3 points and 9.5 rebounds over his last four contests.

Senior Tyler Jones (Lawrenceville, NJ) also was a major factor with 18 points along with 11 rebounds that tied his career best.  Sophomore Mattia Morini (Bologna, Italy) netted 15 points to go with six rebounds, freshman Cardin Joubert (Naples, FL) scored 13 points and sophomore Nazim Derry (Atlantic City, NJ) rounded out all five starters in double figures with 11 points.

Derry's two 3-pointers gives him 57 on the season, tied for ninth best on the College's single-season list.

Bryce Waterman scored 30 points on 10-of-17 shooting with eight 3-pointers and eight rebounds, Luis Armas netted 15 points with Austin Mick adding 13 for the Dolphins (4-11), who shot 50 percent (27-of-54) from the field but could not overcome 16 turnovers.

Goldey-Beacom is on the road Wednesday at Georgian Court, along with the women's team.  Game time is at 8:00 pm, which follows the women's 6:00 pm contest.
