Game Recap: Men's Basketball |

Men’s Basketball Wins Fifth Straight, a 68-65 Thriller at Georgian Court

Junior Juran Ligonde (Boston, MA) posted his latest double-double and drew a massive charge in the closing seconds, helping Goldey-Beacom to a 68-65 Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference win at Georgian Court in Lakewood, NJ.

Goldey-Beacom in the first half continued its high-percentage shooting, going off for 57 percent (16-of-28) from the field with five 3-pointers.  But 10 points from Ligonde and eight from sophomore Mattia Morini (Bologna, Italy) only got the Lightning to a 41-37 deficit at the break.

Sophomore Nazim Derry (Atlantic City, NJ) canned two free throws with 5:06 left to give the Lightning a 59-57 lead.  After a missed jumper on the other end, Derry made a critical layup with 4:33 to go for a four-point margin.

Clint Wright Jr. canned two free throws for the Lions, drawing them to 61-59 with 4:14 remaining, before Ligonde hit 1-of-2 from the stripe with 3:50 to play for a three-point game.  Georgian Court then looked for momentum when Shane Williams found Olisa Ngonadi for an alley-oop dunk with 3:37 left, making it 62-61.

Ligonde then converted two layups, the latter with 2:28 left for a 66-61 GBC margin.  The Lions were not done as Wright made a layup with 2:12 to go and Titus Beard following suit with 1:31 remaining, once again making it a one-point game.

Derry drilled 1-of-2 from the stripe with 43 seconds left for a 67-65 Lightning cushion that set up a defining moment of the game.  Georgian Court worked the ball around the perimeter and Jelani Jackson drove the lane looking for the tying basket, but Ligonde stood his ground and drew the charge with 17 seconds left.

After a foul before the ball was put inbounds, senior Tyler Jones (Lawrenceville, NJ) hit 1-of-2 from the stripe for a 68-65 game.  The Lions had one last chance to tie, but Jackson misfired on a 3-pointer in the closing seconds.

Ligonde, picked Monday to the CACC Weekly Honor Roll for a third time this season, continued his incredible play with 25 points on 11-of-19 shooting and a career-best 15 rebounds for his third double-double in 2021-22.  It is the fifth time this season he has scored at least 20 points and he is averaging 21.0 points and 10.6 rebounds over his last five contests.

Derry closed with 14 points and Morini added 11 for Goldey-Beacom (10-7, 6-2 CACC), which has won five straight contests.  By outscoring Georgian Court 31-24 after intermission, the Lightning own a combined 81-50 second-half margin over the Lions among the two meetings this season.

Goldey-Beacom has won all 16 contests with Georgian Court.

Wright scored 23 points with Beard, Ngonadi and Jackson all netting 10 for the Lions (3-15, 2-8).
