Goldey-Beacom survived an exhilarating 3 1/2 hours of tennis as well as a strong Jefferson squad in notching a 4-3 Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference victory at Delcastle Tennis Center in Wilmington, DE.

Things got off to a great start with the Lightning winning the doubles point.  Salome Lang (Panazol, France) and fellow sophomore Maria Bruno (Maracay, Venezuela) battled their way to a 6-4 triumph over Manni Zhang and Nicole Hrbkova at No. 1 doubles, combined with sophomore Elin Anderson (Conwy, Wales) and freshman Macy Hendin-Walker (Ipswich, England) notching a 6-4 win at third doubles over Noelle Frenzel and Ines Blanc.

Lang gave GBC a 2-1 lead with a convincing 7-5, 6-2 triumph over Frenzel at first singles.  Jefferson leveled the match, 2-2, but Hendin-Walker restored the home side's lead again with a 6-2, 2-6, 6-3 win over Blanc at sixth singles.

The Rams (2-2, 0-1 CACC) got the victory at second singles, so everything came down to sophomore Andrea Fresneda (Valencia, Spain) and Anna Morgillo at fifth singles.  Fresneda battled at every point, rallied from a set down, held two service breaks in the final set and finally lowered the curtain with a 3-6, 6-4, 6-3 win.

This marks the fifth straight year Goldey-Beacom (2-0, 1-0) has won its league opener and it did so against a squad picked first in the preseason coaches poll.  Goldey-Beacom was selected to end third.

Goldey-Beacom is off until next Saturday, when it hosts Dominican (NY) for a noon match at Delcastle.
