Men’s Soccer Chosen to End Fifth in the CACC Preseason Poll

8/23/2021 12:00:00 AM

Goldey-Beacom men's soccer team, which returns many key players from the 2019 squad that hosted a league quarterfinal, has been picked to close fifth in the Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference based on a vote of the league's coaches.

Among those vital contributors back is senior defender Ethan Maguire (Sydney, Australia), who in 2019 was tabbed second team CCA All-East Region and second team All-CACC.  A gifted competitor whose play is valuable on both sides of the field, he closed the year 45th in the nation with seven assists, 57th with 0.39 assists per contest and 34th in the league with 11 points over all 18 games he started.

Junior midfielder Eduardo Coimbra (Curitiba, Brazil) also was picked second team all-league in 2019, giving the Lightning unbelievable scoring ability and making himself an exciting player to watch.  Possessing a deft scoring touch and great passing skills, Coimbra ended 45th in the country with seven assists, 71st with 0.37 assists per game, 97th with 21 points and 14th in the CACC with seven goals.

Senior midfielder Alejandro Varela (Cali, Colombia) is another strong player who has been a major contributor for three years and in 2019 worked his way into the starting lineup.  The two-time member of the CACC Academic Honor Roll ended last season 26th in the conference with three assists, 42nd with three goals and 42nd with nine points.

Goldey-Beacom (11-7-1, 8-4 CACC) during the 2019 campaign recorded a seven-game winning streak, hosted a conference quarterfinal game for the second time in three years, broke the team record with six road wins and its eight league triumphs were one shy of the school record.  It also had a 10-game run in which it did not permit more than one goal in any of those matches.

Goldey-Beacom opens its season September 2 at home against Bloomsburg.
