Game Recap: Baseball |

Baseball Makes it Seven Straight Victories With 4-1 Triumph at Wilmington

Sophomore Marshall Awtry (Hockessin, DE) and junior Trent Hearn (Bethel, DE) each hit a two-run homer and junior Jake Heskett (Derwood, MD) continued his solid year on the mound, pitching seven strong innings in Goldey-Beacom's 4-1 Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference victory at Wilmington (DE) in New Castle, DE.

The critical CACC South Division tussle entered the third inning 0-0 before the Lightning did something about it.  After sophomore Mason Maxwell (Newfield, NJ) drew a one-out walk, Awtry opened the scoring with a two-run homer down the right-field line for his fourth long ball of the season.

The sixth inning saw Goldey-Beacom double its lead.  Freshman Kyle Walker (Wilmington, DE) stroked a one-out single to left and, two batters later, Hearn took his turn in the spotlight with a two-run blast to right field for a 4-0 margin.

The Wildcats generated some noise in the seventh when Brock Nowell lined an RBI single for a 4-1 contest, but he was erased looking to stretch it into a double for a big second out.  Heskett then closed his afternoon by getting Jack McDonald on a flyout to left, ending the frame.

The bullpen took over from there with junior Kevin Roll (Linden, NJ) tossing a one-hit eighth inning and senior Jake Kinsell (Carmichaels, PA) getting two strikeouts in a scoreless ninth for his first career save.

Walker and Hearn each closed with two hits with Walker riding a four-game hitting streak.  Heskett (1-1) allowed just one run and seven hits with two strikeouts, giving him 16 strikeouts and just five walks over 17 innings this season.

Shawn Haut went 3-for-3 for the Wildcats with Dan Hyatt allowing four runs and seven hits over seven frames despite eight strikeouts.

Goldey-Beacom (15-3, 14-3 CACC) now is riding a seven-game winning streak, one shy of its top mark after starting this season 8-0.  It leads Jefferson (15-6) by one game for first place in the South Division with Wilmington (11-6, 11-6) in third.  The top two teams get a bye into the division semifinals of the CACC Tournament.

The Lightning entered the game ranked eighth in the latest National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association (NCBWA) East Region poll and the Wildcats were sixth.

Goldey-Beacom is on the road Thursday to visit University of the Sciences for a 1:00 pm doubleheader at Richie Ashburn Field in Philadelphia, PA.
