Game Recap: Softball |

Softball Handed Two Tough Losses by Post

Goldey-Beacom valiantly took game two of its Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference doubleheader with Post to extra innings, but in the end was dealt a sweep by scores of 12-8 and 12-9 at the Jackson Complex in Wilmington, DE.

Post (12-6, 12-6 CACC) in game two erupted for six runs in the top of the second inning for a 6-2 lead.  Cassidy Petrie ripped a two-run triple, Allyson Wallauer cracked an RBI double with Demi Rivera and Caitlin DeAngelis adding run-scoring singles.

The margin was 9-5 going to the last of the sixth before the Lightning (4-9, 4-9) got four runs to tie it.  Junior pinch-hitter Taylor Beres (Middletown, DE) ripped a two-run single and freshman Gwen Safin (Stroudsburg, PA) leveled things with a booming two-run double to center.

But Post found a way in the eighth, the first extra inning.  DeAngelis with one out did something rarely done at the Jackson Complex, hit one out in between the fair poles as her solo blast made it a 10-9 game.  Bailee Zaccaro lined an RBI single and then crossed home on a wild pitch to close the scoring.

Sophomore Braydee Whitman (Dagsboro, DE) and freshman Hannah Davis (Bethel, DE) each had three hits with Safin and junior Jaeda Henriquez (Jersey City, NJ) adding two apiece for the Lightning.

DeAngelis, Zaccaro and Kasey Jusino closed with three hits apiece for the Eagles.  Maddison Caldwell struck out two over two scoreless frames for the win.

DeAngelis' first home run of the day occurred in the first inning of game one, when she hit a two-RBI shot inside the park down the right-field line for a 2-0 lead.

Post held a 4-2 lead going to the last of the third when senior Kylie Quirk (Newark, DE) cranked a two-run double for a tie game.  GBC then got four more in the fourth, keyed by Beres' two-run single for an 8-4 lead.

But the Eagles took over from there.  They plated five in the fifth for a 9-8 lead with Zaccaro's two-run single being the key hit.  Post got three more in the sixth for the final, aided by RBI doubles from DeAngelis and Jusino.

DeAngelis and Zaccaro each had three hits and RBI, Petrie rapped three hits with Wallauer adding two and two RBI.  Kelsey Strayer (2-0) fired 3 1/3 scoreless frames for the win.

Senior Kasey Goshorn (Salisbury, MD) had three hits for the Lightning with Quirk, Davis and senior Jess Lusk (Victoria, BC) each getting two.  Lusk hit a two-run double in the fourth off the flag of Canada put in right-center field in her honor.

Goldey-Beacom on Sunday will make up its final game of the season against Nyack, starting at 2:00 pm at the College of Staten Island.

Thoughts from Coach Bill Streets

On chipping away and getting back into the games: "I am very proud of the kids today. We had a chance to honor our kids that are graduating, and I think that the team really stepped up and wanted to perform at their best. As you said, we came back from a deficit a few times and it just was not in the cards today. I am very proud of the way that they played today, and I hope that it should continue that way."

On coming up with clutch hits: "We hope the momentum stays with us. We had two good games against Post today who is a very quality team. We have a tough road coming up. We have six doubleheaders coming up in six days so it is not easy for everybody, but we just hope that the kids keep playing at the level they were playing at today."
