Softball Drops Two at Jefferson

Goldey-Beacom went up against a perennially strong club in Jefferson and was dealt a pair of Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference losses, 7-2 and 12-3, in Philadelphia, PA.

The Lightning in game one opened the scoring in the top of the first inning.  Senior Kasey Goshorn (Salisbury, MD) lined a two-out single, took second on a passed ball and scored when sophomore Braydee Whitman (Dagsboro, DE) ripped an RBI single.

Jefferson took a 2-1 lead in the first, then exploded for three runs in the second for a four-run margin.  Katelyn Stys drove one in on a fielder's choice, Victoria Juckniewitz ripped an RBI triple and Ali Murphy added a run-scoring groundout.

Goldey-Beacom got one back in the fourth when senior Jess Lusk (Victoria, BC) doubled to get home Whitman for a 5-2 game.  But Jefferson restored the four-run discrepancy in the last of the frame when Murphy's single allowed Julia Heine to score.

Whitman ended 3-for-3 for the second straight contest with Goshorn and Lusk recording two hits apiece.  Lusk (1-1) struck out four over six innings, holding the Rams to only six hits.

Emily Akelaitis (3-2) yielded just two runs – one earned – and five hits over four innings for Jefferson.  Gianna DeLorenzo struck out three over three scoreless frames for the save.

The Rams in game two plated three runs in the last of the second for a 4-0 lead, aided by Heine getting a two-run triple and then scoring on an error.  They got four more in the fourth to double the margin, helped by Breck Urban's RBI single and Akelaitis' two-run single.

Goldey-Beacom cracked the scoreboard in the fifth with three runs for an 8-3 deficit.  Freshman Hannah Davis (Bethel, DE) lined an RBI single to score sophomore Emily Lozowski (Marlton, NJ) and Whitman continued her strong play with a two-run single.

But Jefferson ended things in the last of the fifth when Akelaitis crushed a grand slam to left-center field.

Davis finished with two hits for the Lightning (3-5, 3-5 CACC).  Akelaitis closed with three hits and six RBI for the Rams (11-5, 11-5).

Whitman now is 7-for-9 over her last three contests and has a hit in five of the Lightning's six games this season.

Goldey-Beacom is home Wednesday for a 2:30 pm doubleheader against Nyack at the Jackson Complex.
