Softball Drops Season Openers to Caldwell

Goldey-Beacom opened its 2021 campaign against one the Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference's elite and was handed a pair of defeats, 12-4 and 10-1, by Caldwell at the Jackson Complex in Wilmington, DE.

Caldwell in the opener got three runs in the third inning, keyed by Taylor Mischler's two-run single, and then plated six more in the fourth for a 9-0 cushion.  Paige Sandoval had the big blow in the frame with a two-run single.

The Lightning got two runs back in the fifth for a 9-2 deficit.  Freshman Nicole Makin (Edgewater, Park, NJ) led off with a single and then the bases were loaded courtesy of walks to junior Zoe Lockwood (Chesapeake City, MD) and sophomore Kayla Vaillancourt (Edgewater, MD).  Senior Kasey Goshorn (Salisbury, MD) then lined an RBI single, which scored two runs.

The Cougars got three back in the sixth for a 12-2 lead before the Lightning scored twice in the last of the frame.  Makin and freshman Hannah Davis (Bethel, DE) both were hit by a pitch with two outs and scored when freshman Maddie Beres (Middletown, DE) lined a two-run triple to left-center field.

Courtney Grundhauser had three hits for the Cougars with Mariah Culver (1-0) allowing just one hit over 4 1/3 innings.

Caldwell in game two got five runs in the second inning to open the scoring, highlighted by Grundhauser's leadoff triple to set the tone.  Paige Silvia roped a two-run single in the third to make it 7-0 and Mischler added an RBI double in the fifth for a 10-0 margin.

The Lightning got their run in the fifth when freshman pinch-runner Jazlee Rojas (Smyrna, DE) crossed home on a throwing error.

Junior Jaeda Henriquez (Jersey City, NJ) recorded two hits as part of her three-hit day for Goldey-Beacom.

Mischler and Sandoval had two hits apiece for the Cougars.  Kayla Daly (1-0) struck out four over four innings, yielding four hits and no walks.

Today marked Goldey-Beacom's first home athletics event in any sport in 373 days.  The last event was the women's tennis squad defeating Delaware State, 5-2, on March 12, 2020.

Goldey-Beacom is home next Thursday for a CACC doubleheader against Chestnut Hill, beginning at 2:30 pm.
