Women’s Basketball Pulls Away in the Fourth Quarter for a 72-62 Win at the District of Columbia



Junior Mone Izumi (Fukuoka, Japan) scored eight of her season-high 14 points in the fourth quarter and Goldey-Beacom continued its solid defense throughout in a 72-62 victory at the District of Columbia in Washington, DC.
 
Goldey-Beacom in the opening half once again saw practically its entire roster utilized en route to a 35-34 halftime lead.  The Lightning allowed the Firebirds to shoot just 37 percent (11-of-30) from the floor, 3-of-11 from three-point range and induced seven turnovers.
 
Alexis Harrison (Millville, NJ) closed the half with nine points and eight rebounds, fellow junior Sarah Round (Northampton, England) also poured in nine points with sophomore Briana Seltzer (Reading, PA) adding eight.
 
After a seemingly level third quarter, Goldey-Beacom (5-6) began to take control in the fourth by scoring seven straight points in 83 seconds for a 57-49 lead with 8:27 left.  Sophomore Janiya Stevens (Ellendale, DE) converted an old-fashioned three-point play with Harrison and sophomore Mickey Williams (Wamboin, Australia) adding two points apiece.
 
The final period belonged to Izumi, who shot 3-of-3 from the floor and canned two free throws in addition to notching five rebounds and two assists.  She also finished the contest with a career-high seven rebounds, four assists that tied her personal best and shot 6-of-7 from the field.
 
Seltzer ended with 14 points, Round netted 13 that were one off her season best, Harrison had 11 and nine rebounds with Stevens hauling in a career-high nine rebounds.
 
The Lightning's defense again was a big factor, holding the Firebirds to just 32 percent shooting (6-of-19) in the fourth quarter and 34 percent (22-of-65) overall.  It is the fifth time this season Goldey-Beacom has held an opponent below 40 percent.
 
Destiny Ryles scored 12 points with Tori Williams, Kensley Benjamin and Halia Ellis netting 11 apiece for UDC (6-5).
 
Goldey-Beacom is home Saturday against Adelphi, beginning at 3:00 pm.  The men's squad plays before them against Saint Rose at 1:00 pm.
