Goldey-Beacom Sits First in the CACC Fall Men’s Sportsmanship Standings

12/15/2021 12:00:00 AM

With the 2021 fall season in the books, Goldey-Beacom owns the lead in the Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference Men's Sportsmanship Standings.

"We are proud of all of our teams' accomplishments throughout the year and being recognized for sportsmanship is no exception," Director of Athletics Jeremy Benoit said. "In addition to the student-athletes, a lot of credit can be afforded to our coaching staffs who work diligently to recruit and retain top-level talent and character.  As athletic director, one of my primary objectives is for our department to succeed by doing things the right way and this distinction is just one manifestation of that idea."

CACC Commissioner Dan Mara made the announcement with Goldey-Beacom recording an average total of 17.5 points.  Chestnut Hill and Jefferson are tied for second with an average of 16.0 points.

The Lightning were identified as the first-place school by the number of sportsmanship votes received, divided by the number of male sports competed.  The three men's sports Goldey-Beacom competed in during the fall included cross country, soccer and golf.  Only cross country and soccer voted for their respective sportsmanship awards, as golf will conduct its voting in the spring.

Each sport's team sportsmanship award is voted on by the league's head coaches in their respective sport.  Head coaches speak with their student-athletes before voting to gain feedback on which opposing teams demonstrated outstanding class and character throughout the season.

Goldey-Beacom's cross country and soccer programs each finished second in the voting for its team sportsmanship awards.  Cross country earned 18 points in the voting and soccer received 17 points.

Among the recent GBC teams to win the league's Sportsmanship Award include softball in 2016 and 2018, men's cross country in 2017 and 2018, women's cross country in 2018, women's basketball in 2020 and baseball in 2017.

Goldey-Beacom also held the lead in the lead in the CACC Men's Sportsmanship Standings after the 2017 fall season.
