Women's Basketball Holds on for 71-67 Triumph at Staten Island



Goldey-Beacom received a great offensive output over the final 20 minutes and held off a late charge for a 71-67 triumph at the College of Staten Island in Staten Island, NY.
 
Goldey-Beacom in the opening half saw 14 players get on the floor as it gained a 29-28 halftime lead.  Alexis Harrison (Millville, NJ) had nine points and six rebounds, fellow junior Sarah Round (Northampton, England) netted seven points and junior Vera Lauhaluoma (Espoo, Finland) added six.
 
The Lightning in the third quarter got their offensive game in gear, scoring 23 points by shooting 56 percent (10-of-18) from the floor to open a 52-47 lead.  Briana Seltzer (Reading, PA) netted seven points in the period, Harrison scored six and fellow sophomore Mickey Williams (Wamboin, Australia) added five.
 
CSI hung around, but GBC began to take control with a 13-3 run over 4 1/2 minutes for a 67-52 margin with 4:35 left.  Sophomore Janiya Stevens (Ellendale, DE) netted five points in that spurt with Seltzer and Williams adding three apiece.
 
The lead was at 69-54 with 2:54 remaining before the Dolphins poured in the next 13 points, moving to 69-67 with 0.8 seconds left.  However, Stevens canned two free throws with 0.2 seconds remaining for the final.
 
Harrison, today named to the Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference Weekly Honor Roll, closed with 19 points on 7-of-10 shooting and 10 rebounds for her second double-double in the last three outings.  Seltzer recorded 12 points and seven assists with Round adding 10 points for the Lightning (4-6), who shot 42 percent (27-of-64) from the floor.
 
Noemia Massingue had 13 points and nine rebounds, Ashley Lambert scored 13 points with Jenalyse Alarcon adding 12 and nine rebounds for the Dolphins (2-5), who shot just 40 percent (21-of-52) from the field.
 
Goldey-Beacom on Wednesday is back on the road to face the District of Columbia.  Game time is at 5:00 pm.
