Game Recap: Men's Basketball |

Men’s Basketball Gets Great Play on Both Ends of the Court in 64-60 Win at USciences

Goldey-Beacom rallied to take the lead and then got two massive defensive stops in the final 20 seconds for a 64-60 Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference win at University of the Sciences in Philadelphia, PA.

A close game throughout the second half saw the Devils break a 56-56 tie when Austin Kennedy drilled a 3-pointer with 2:37 left.  USciences got the ball back, but senior Tyler Jones (Lawrenceville, NJ) came up with a steal that led to his two free throws with 1:40 remaining for a 59-58 deficit.

Sean Simon missed a 3-pointer for USciences and GBC now had a chance for the lead.  The visitors worked the ball around to sophomore Mekhi Collins (Medford, MA) and he threw a pass down low to junior Juran Ligonde (Boston, MA), who got a layup with 71 seconds left for a 60-59 margin.

Joemel McNair on the Devils' next possession hit 1-of-2 from the line with 54 seconds remaining for a 60-60 tie.  After sophomore Nazim Derry (Atlantic City, NJ) missed a 3-pointer for the Lightning, Ligonde got a huge offensive rebound and hit once from the line with 38 seconds to play for a 61-60 game.

USciences' next possession is when Goldey-Beacom started to take control.  The home side worked the ball around to no avail and that forced Omari Salvi to throw it away for a huge turnover.

Freshman Cardin Joubert (Naples, FL) canned 1-of-2 from the line with 20 seconds left for a 62-60 game.

The Devils then called timeout with the shot clock off, looking to tie or win.  But the Lightning again forced the home side to not get off a shot as Collins intercepted Simon's pass for yet another huge play.

Collins' two free throws with four seconds remaining made it 64-60.

The Lightning's solid defense made the difference, forcing nine of the Devils' 17 turnovers in the second half and making them shoot just 35 percent (20-of-58) overall.  USciences also went just 8-of-29 from three-point range, including 5-of-13 after intermission.

Ligonde tied his career best with 19 points on 8-of-10 shooting to go with seven rebounds for Goldey-Beacom (4-6, 2-2 CACC), which shot 60 percent (12-of-20) from the field after intermission and 51 percent (23-of-45) overall.

Jones ended with 10 points, five assists, five steals and four rebounds over 37 minutes with Derry getting 10 points, six rebounds and four assists over 35 minutes.

McNair poured in 13 points with Salvi and Tommy Gardler adding 11 apiece for the Devils (2-6, 2-1).

Goldey-Beacom came to play defense in the opening half, allowing USciences to shoot just 27 percent (9-of-34) from the field and 3-of-16 from three-point range to gain a 28-27 halftime cushion.  Sophomore Mattia Morini (Bologna, Italy) netted eight points for the Lightning with two 3-pointers and Derry added six points.

Goldey-Beacom returns to action Tuesday at Adelphi.  Game time in Garden City, NY is at 7:30 pm.
