Game Recap: Men's Basketball |

Men’s Basketball Dealt 78-74 Loss by Kutztown

Sophomore Mekhi Collins (Medford, MA) poured in a season-best 28 points and nearly carried his squad across the finish line, but Goldey-Beacom just fell short in a 78-74 loss to Kutztown at the Jones Center in Wilmington, DE.

Down 48-41 early in the second half, Goldey-Beacom rattled off the next 10 points to gain a 51-48 lead with 13:34 left.  Sophomore Nazim Derry (Atlantic City, NJ) continued his solid play with six points and Collins netted four.

The game remained close the rest of the way with Collins giving his unit a 71-69 lead at the 1:40 mark, courtesy of two free throws.  Moe Williams got those points right back and then some for the Golden Bears, converting an old-fashioned three-point play with 1:33 to go for a 72-71 margin.

Freshman Cardin Joubert (Naples, FL) hit 1-of-2 from the stripe with 82 seconds remaining to pull the Lightning even at 72.  After Kutztown missed a jumper, GBC followed suit and then committed a foul with 44 seconds left.  Williams canned both free throws for a 74-72 margin.

Then came the game's biggest possession.  Collins was driving to the goal looking for the tie, but Evan-Eric Longino swatted the ball from his hands for the turnover.  Wesley Butler was fouled with 15 seconds left and made both free throws for a 76-72 game.

Collins' layup with 10 seconds to go made it 76-74, but Michael Smith III restored Kutztown's margin by hitting two free throws with 9.4 seconds to play for the final.

Collins shot 12-of-20 from the floor in addition to getting seven assists and five rebounds.  He has scored in double figures all six games this season, averaging 17.5 points over his last four contests.

Freshman Elijah Rantin (Baltimore, MD) notched 16 points and seven rebounds with Derry, named to the Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference Weekly Honor Roll each of the last two weeks, adding 12 and six for the Lightning (2-4).

Butler went on a tear with 29 points on 10-of-17 shooting with five 3-pointers for the Golden Bears (2-3), who shot 49 percent (26-of-53) from the field.  Smith netted 15 points and Williams added 13.

Goldey-Beacom is home Wednesday against Georgian Court as part of a doubleheader with the women's team.  Game time is at 8:00 pm, which follows the women's 6:00 pm contest.
