Men’s Basketball Strikes Back in 88-75 Triumph Over Georgian Court

Goldey-Beacom made the second half its time to shine as it dominated Georgian Court in that span for an 88-75 triumph in both teams Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference opener at the Jones Center in Wilmington, DE.

The game provided yet another showcase for sophomore Nazim Derry (Atlantic City, NJ), who ended with a career-high 35 points on 11-of-17 shooting and drilled a personal best nine 3-pointers.  This marks the fourth time this season the three-time pick to the CACC Weekly Honor Roll has notched a career high in points with at least 24.

Derry is averaging 22.0 points per game this season and 24.0 points over his last six contests.  He also has hit at least five 3-pointers three times in the early campaign.

Goldey-Beacom took over by scoring 26 consecutive points in just over six minutes for a 64-55 lead with 11:28 remaining.  Derry and junior Malcolm Weathers (Virginia Beach, VA) poured in nine points apiece in that time to help the Lightning shoot 10-of-14 from the floor and force the Lions into seven turnovers.

GBC in the second half shot 67 percent (18-of-27) from the field with 11 three-pointers, getting 23 points from Derry and 12 from Weathers.  Georgian Court shot just 36 percent (9-of-25) from the floor in that span with 10 turnovers.

Weathers netted a season-best 15 points on 5-of-8 shooting with sophomore Mekhi Collins (Medford, MA) adding 11 and eight assists for the Lightning (3-4, 1-0 CACC), who shot 57 percent (33-of-58) from the field along with netting 17 three-pointers.

Clint Wright Jr. scored 27 points on 9-of-14 shooting, Jelani Jackson netted 17, Andreas VonFricke poured in 16 and Shane Williams added 10 for the Lions (1-5, 0-1), who shot 53 percent (28-of-53) overall but committed 17 turnovers.

Goldey-Beacom finally is back on the road Saturday to visit Chestnut Hill as part of a doubleheader with the women's team.  The men's game starts at 3:00 pm, which follows the women's 1:00 pm contest.
