Game Recap: Women's Basketball |

Women’s Basketball Handed 64-58 Loss by Mercy

Goldey-Beacom looked to stay unbeaten before a raucous crowd in its homer opener, but a fourth-quarter lead slipped through the fingertips in a 64-58 loss to Mercy at the Jones Center in Wilmington, DE.

The Lightning took a 55-54 lead with 4:15 left when junior Mone Izumi (Fukuoka, Japan), who has played nothing but amazing basketball in the early going, stole the ball and hit a fast-break layup.

But the Mavericks had an answer with Katie Wall knocking down a jumper with 3:38 remaining and Kellie Nudd adding a layup 32 seconds later for a 58-55 lead.  Brianne Santos canned a free throw with 1:42 to play for a four-point contest and Asha Talib's layup with 1:17 to go made it 61-55.

Sophomore Briana Seltzer (Reading, PA) nailed a 3-pointer with 1:01 left to get GBC within 61-58 and the home side got the ball back following Nudd's turnover.  But the Lightning misfired on three 3-pointers and Nudd hit twice from the line with six seconds to play for a five-point game.

Seltzer, junior Alexis Harrison (Millville, NJ) and freshman Azuri Abraham (Phillipsburg, NJ) each scored 10 points for the Lightning, who could not overcome shooting 33 percent (26-of-78) from the field and 4-of-24 from three-point range.

Katie Wall, playing most of the fourth quarter with four fouls, ended with 25 points on 9-of-13 shooting for the Mavericks (2-2).  Maria Tedesco had 11 points and 10 rebounds, Nudd scored 10 and Talib hauled in 10 rebounds.

Goldey-Beacom is on the road Tuesday to visit Shippensburg.  Game time is at 6:00 pm.
