Game Recap: Men's Basketball |

Nazim Derry Again Has a Career Night for Men’s Basketball in Tough 87-79 Loss at Saint Thomas Aquinas

This is not a recording as sophomore Nazim Derry (Atlantic City, NJ) recorded career highs in points a second consecutive game and matched his career best in 3-pointers, but all were not enough for Goldey-Beacom in an 87-79 loss at Saint Thomas Aquinas in Sparkill, NY.

Derry ended with 30 points on 10-of-17 shooting and canned five 3-pointers.  This came after he recorded 24 points and five 3-pointers in Goldey-Beacom's last game Sunday against Southern Connecticut State.

Derry tonight kept his momentum going in the opening half, netting 20 points on 6-of-9 shooting with three 3-pointers.  This, along with eight points from senior Tyler Jones (Lawrenceville, NJ), helped the Lightning shoot 40 percent (12-of-30) from the floor and never trail in the half for a 44-35 lead.

That momentum carried into the second half when Derry's layup with 6:07 left put Goldey-Beacom ahead, 70-62.

But the Spartans took over from there, ending the contest on a 25-9 run in which they shot 6-of-9 from the floor and held the Lightning to just 4-of-12.  Demetre Roberts scored 10 points in that span with Antonio Vendola adding seven for STAC, which only led for just over four minutes.

Derry, named this week to the Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference Weekly Honor Roll, is averaging 22.3 points over three games this season and has canned 12 three-pointers.

Jones scored 18 points with sophomore Mekhi Collins (Medford, MA) getting 14 and seven rebounds for the Lightning (0-3), who shot 47 percent (27-of-58) from the floor.

Roberts poured in 28 points on 9-of-17 shooting with five 3-pointers, Grant Singleton scored 15 points, Vendola netted 13 and Osbel Caraballo added 10 for the Spartans (3-2), who shot 50 percent (30-of-60) from the field and hit 13 three-pointers.

Saint Thomas Aquinas last week was ranked eighth in the country, but a loss last Saturday to Dominican (NY) dropped the former from the national rankings.

Goldey-Beacom on Saturday is home against the District of Columbia as part of the College's annual Legacy Night.  Game time is at 3:00 pm, followed by the women's contest against Mercy at 5:00 pm.
