Game Recap: Men's Basketball |

Nazim Derry’s Career Day Not Enough for Men’s Basketball in 88-68 Loss to Southern Connecticut State

Sophomore Nazim Derry (Atlantic City, NJ) did everything he could to help Goldey-Beacom attain its first win of the season, but his effort fell short in his squad's 88-68 loss to Southern Connecticut State in Bridgeport, CT.

The first half for the Lightning belonged to Derry, who scored 18 points on 7-of-14 shooting with three 3-pointers.  Unfortunately, the Owls shot 57 percent (17-of-30) from the floor and canned six 3-pointers to open a 48-33 halftime cushion.

Southern Connecticut State continued its scoring burst to open the second half, using a 24-12 run to gain a 72-45 cushion with 11:23 remaining.  Lyron Bennett scored eight points in that time with C.J. Seaforth netting six.

Derry ended with 24 points, besting his previous best of 23 set December 4, 2019 against the District of Columbia.  His five 3-pointers also is a personal high after getting three on seven occasions.

Senior Tyler Jones (Lawrenceville, NJ) ended with 10 points, six rebounds, six assists and three steals with sophomore Mekhi Collins (Medford, MA) adding 10, five, five and four for the Lightning (0-2), who shot 40 percent (21-of-53) from the floor.

Ulyen Coleman scored 19 points on 7-of-14 shooting, Aaron Russell contributed 17 and eight assists, Seaford scored 12 points and Bennett added 10 for the Owls (2-0).

The schedule does not get easier for Goldey-Beacom, which on Wednesday visits eighth-ranked Saint Thomas Aquinas.  Game time is at 7:00 pm.
