Game Recap: Women's Basketball |

Women’s Basketball Guts its Way to 68-64 Triumph Over Saint Rose

Goldey-Beacom held a double-digit lead in the fourth quarter and had to withstand a furious rally before holding on for a 68-64 win over Saint Rose in Philadelphia, PA.

The Lightning (2-0) in the third quarter turned a 35-34 halftime deficit into a 57-50 lead, scoring 23 points in the frame and forcing the Golden Knights into nine turnovers.  Junior Sarah Round (Northampton, England) continued her outstanding pay by nailing two 3-pointers in that span for six points with junior Alexis Harrison (Millville, NJ) and sophomore Mickey Williams (Wamboin, Australia) netting five apiece.

The margin was 64-53 before Saint Rose used an 11-1 run to close to 65-64 with 50 seconds remaining.  Nina Fedullo scored nine points in that time to help her unit shoot 4-of-9 from the floor.

The Golden Knights then had a chance to take the lead, but Naeva Rene missed a layup with 22 seconds left and Harrison got the rebound.  Sophomore Briana Seltzer (Reading, PA) canned two free throws with 12 seconds remaining for a 67-64 margin.

Saint Rose still had a chance to tie, but Becca Townes misfired on a 3-pointer in the closing seconds.

Harrison closed with 15 points on 7-of-12 shooting with nine rebounds, Seltzer netted 15 points with three 3-pointers and Round ended with 11 and three.

Round now is at 678 career points, moving into 18th place in team history.  Her 142 career 3-pointers keeps her fifth.

Ashia Smith netted 15 points on 6-of-10 shooting for the Golden Knights (0-2), who shot 41 percent (25-of-61) from the field but were 2-of-15 from three-point range and 12-for-23 from the foul line.

Goldey-Beacom does not play again until next Saturday, when it hosts Mercy as part of the College's annual Legacy Night.  Game time is after 5:00 pm with the men's contest against the District of Columbia preceding it at 3:00 pm.
