Men’s Basketball Drops 63-59 Contest at Bridgeport in its Season Opener

Goldey-Beacom showed many flashes of brilliance in its season opener, but could not hold a late lead in a tough 63-59 loss at Bridgeport in Bridgeport, CT.

Goldey-Beacom in the opening half possessed an early lead before Bridgeport ended the stanza on a 25-15 spurt, gaining a 32-26 cushion.  Junior Juran Ligonde (Boston, MA) netted eight points in the half with senior Tyler Jones (Lawrenceville, NJ) getting seven and seven rebounds for the Lightning, who shot 43 percent (12-of-35) from the floor.

The second half was a battle that saw the Lightning score eight straight points, closing to a 39-38 deficit with 12:36 remaining.  Jones and sophomore Mekhi Collins (Medford, MA) each netted four points in that span.

The Purple Knights then went on a 16-4 run spanning six minutes to gain a 55-42 lead with 5:01 left.  Tim Dawson netted five points for Bridgeport, which shot 5-of-10 from the floor in that span.

Goldey-Beacom kept the pressure going and had the home side on edge when sophomore Nazim Derry (Atlantic City, NJ) drilled a 3-pointer with 2:28 left for a 55-51 deficit.  Sophomore Zack Oree (Newark, NJ) made it a two-point contest on the Lightning's next possession when he hit a layup with 1:50 to go.

Jones got a steal on Bridgeport's next possession and GBC worked it to Derry, who completed an old-fashioned three-point play to give his side a 56-55 lead with 1:26 remaining.

The cushion lasted all of 19 seconds before Mason Williams canned a 3-pointer that put Bridgeport ahead, 58-56.  A series of empty possessions and missed free throws followed before Dawson made 1-of-2 from the strip with 29 seconds left for a 59-56 game.

Goldey-Beacom (0-1) could not get a layup to go down on its possession and Nemanja Zubac hauled in a huge rebound for Bridgeport (1-0).  Williams then hit two more from the line with 12 seconds left for a 61-56 lead.

Jones hit a 3-pointer from the top of the key with 7.7 seconds remaining for a 61-59 game, but Dawson ended his 5-for-6 day from the line by drilling a pair with 6.9 seconds to play for the final.

Jones finished with 19 points, 10 rebounds, five assists and five steals for his first Navy and Vegas Gold double-double.  Collins scored 16 points on 7-of-14 shooting, Ligonde had 10 and seven rebounds with Derry getting 10 and six.

Ryo Kobayashi scored 14 points, Williams netted 13 with Dawson adding 12 for the Purple Knights.

Goldey-Beacom concludes its Bridgeport stay Sunday with a 1:00 pm game against Southern Connecticut State.
