Women’s Basketball Opens Season with 58-45 Triumph Over Saint Michael’s



Goldey-Beacom used a scoring burst in each half to take control for a 58-45 season-opening triumph over Saint Michael's in Philadelphia, PA.
 
Goldey-Beacom shook off a slow start to end the first half on a 19-5 run, shooting 7-of-16 from the floor and limiting Saint Michael's to just 2-of-12, for a 24-18 lead.  Mone Izumi (Fukuoka, Japan) scored six points in that time with fellow junior Sarah Round (Northampton, England) and sophomore Janiya Stevens (Ellendale, DE) adding four apiece.
 
The Lightning in the opening half used solid defense to hold the Purple Knights to just 25 percent shooting (6-of-24) and force 14 turnovers.
 
Goldey-Beacom then poured in on in the third quarter, outscoring Saint Michael's 25-9 to gain a 49-27 cushion.  Round scored nine points in the period and junior Alexis Harrison (Millville, NJ) added eight for the Lightning, who shot 52 percent (11-of-21) from the field in that span and limited the Purple Knights to just 21 percent (3-of-14).
 
Harrison scored 13 points on 6-of-11 shooting with four blocks, Round netted 13 points with four 3-pointers, Izumi scored 10 points in her Lightning debut and Stevens hauled in eight rebounds for the Lightning (1-0).
 
Makayla Blake scored 11 points and Nicole Ladas grabbed 10 rebounds for the Purple Knights (0-1).
 
Goldey-Beacom is back at it Saturday against Saint Rose.  Game time at the University of the Sciences is at noon.
