Game Recap: Men's Basketball |

Men’s Basketball Clinches Second Place in CACC South with 78-69 Win Over Georgian Court

Goldey-Beacom shook off a charge from Georgian Court and clinched second place in the Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference South Division with a 78-69 victory over Georgian Court at the Jones Center in Wilmington, DE.

The Lightning (14-12, 11-6 CACC) will host a quarterfinal game in the CACC Tournament for a third straight year, one off the school record set from 2009-12.  That game is Tuesday, March 3 at 6:00 pm against the third seed from the North Division.

Things looked in hand with 9:59 left when Goldey-Beacom held its biggest lead, 61-41.  That was before the Lions went on a 22-9 run over the next seven minutes, moving to 70-63 with 3:07 remaining.  Davon Floyd scored six points in that time.

GBC got the lead to 72-63 with 2:49 to play when junior Kyle Elliot (Rahway, NJ) canned a pair of free throws.  However, Georgian Court got the next six points and moved to 72-69 with 69 seconds to go.  Alonzo Ortiz-Traylor ended it on a 3-pointer.

Junior Tevin Service (Union, NJ) made a layup with 47 seconds left that gave the Lightning a 74-69 bulge.  After Justin Figueroa missed a 3-pointer for the Lions, Elliot grabbed the rebound and the home side looked to extend the lead.

But freshman Nazim Derry (Atlantic City, NJ) missed the front end of a one-and-one and Georgian Court had new life.  Ortiz-Traylor looked to take matters into his own hands by driving to the goal, but junior Tyler Jones (Lawrenceville, NJ) drew a huge charge for Goldey-Beacom with 19 seconds left and his side got the ball.

Derry made amends by hitting two free throws one second later for a 76-69 margin with 18 seconds to go.

Sophomore Juran Ligonde (Boston, MA) closed with 15 points on 6-of-8 shooting and 12 rebounds for his fourth double-double of the season, Elliot scored 14 points with Jones and Derry adding 12 apiece for the Lightning, who shot 48 percent (29-of-61) from the field.

Figueroa and Ortiz-Traylor netted 13 points apiece with Caleb Bowser adding 11 for the Lions (8-16, 6-11), who shot 38 percent (21-of-55) from the floor and committed 16 turnovers.

Goldey-Beacom is home Wednesday against ninth-ranked Jefferson, beginning at 8:00 pm.
