Game Recap: Women's Basketball |

Women’s Basketball’s Stunning Comeback Leads to 62-60 Win at Holy Family

Goldey-Beacom came back from 18 points down in the fourth quarter and turned its Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference game at Holy Family into a shocking 62-60 victory in Philadelphia, PA.

The Lightning were down 17 early in the fourth and 54-36 with 6:26 remaining for the stunner.  Things began with a 10-2 run spanning 3 1/2 minutes that got the visitors to a 56-46 margin with 3:16 to go.  Senior Amanda McGrogan (Mount Laurel, NJ) netted four points in that time.

The Tigers increased the margin to 58-46 with 2:45 left before the Lightning poured in the next 12 points for a tie game.  McGrogan scored the last five points, including a steal and layup for the tie with 1:31 remaining, and sophomore Lexi Weikert (Harrisburg, PA) nailed a crucial 3-pointer.

Anjelai Hayes hit two free throws for Holy Family with 1:22 left for a 60-58 margin.  But sophomore Alexis Harrison (Millville, NJ) continued to be a force in the post, hitting a jumper with 61 seconds to play for a tie game.

Elizabeth Radley had one of her few misses on the night when she could not hit a 3-pointer for the Tigers and sophomore Reetta Saaski (Espoo, Finland) hauled in the rebound for the Lightning (7-15, 7-7 CACC).  Two misses followed for GBC, but each resulted in McGrogan getting huge offensive rebounds and she was fouled on the last with 10 seconds left.

She made both free throws for a 62-60 margin, Goldey-Beacom's first lead since 11-9 with 3:17 remaining in the first.

The Tigers had the ball in a spot they certainly did not think they would be.  Mia Ehling missed a jumper and Hayes got the offensive rebound, but she could not hit at the buzzer.

McGrogan simply was the difference, ending with 21 points that included 14 in the final period.  She also closed with six rebounds, five assists and five steals for her squad's sixth victory in the last seven outings.

McGrogan now has 1,235 career points, moving into eighth place in school history.

Harrison closed with 13 points on 6-of-12 shooting for GBC, which shot 55 percent (11-of-20) from the floor in the fourth period, limited Holy Family to 22 percent (2-of-9) and forced the home side into nine turnovers.

Harrison now has scored in double figures nine straight games, a run which includes five double-doubles.

Radley scored 19 points on 9-of-13 shooting and Hayes added 16 for the Tigers (14-9, 12-3), who shot 46 percent (24-of-52) from the floor.

The Tigers flexed their muscle in the first half by roaring to a 32-18 lead, shooting 47 percent (9-of-14) from the floor and forcing seven turnovers.  Radley scored nine points in the half and Hayes added eight for Holy Family, which shot 64 percent (9-of-14) from the field in the second quarter and scored 20 points.

Goldey-Beacom returns home Saturday to battle Dominican (NY) at 1:00 pm in a rematch of last year's CACC quarterfinals.  The men's game between the same schools follows at 3:00 pm.
