Game Recap: Women's Basketball |

Women’s Basketball Falls Just Short in 65-64 Loss to Holy Family

Goldey-Beacom nearly made a valiant comeback late in the contest, but came up just short in a 65-64 Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference loss to Holy Family at the Jones Center in Wilmington, DE.

The Lightning were in a 59-45 hole with 3:36 left before scoring the next 11 points, moving to a three-point contest with 1:40 remaining.  Senior Amanda McGrogan (Mount Laurel, NJ) netted the first eight points in that time and sophomore Lexi Weikert (Harrisburg, PA) ended it with a 3-pointer.

Both teams stepped it up on defense and the score remaining unchanged for over a minute.  Holy Family would get the next points with 39 seconds remaining when Mia Ehling canned two huge free throws, making it 61-56.

Goldey-Beacom sophomore Alexis Harrison (Millville, NJ) made a quick layup with 37 seconds to go for a 61-58 game before Holy Family's Casey Schweitzer hit once from the line two seconds later, making it a four-point game.

McGrogan's layup with 27 seconds to go moved GBC within 62-60, but Ehling came through again six seconds later with two free throws for a four-point contest.  Harrison hit once from the stripe with 13 seconds to play for a 64-61 game before Ehling made one from the line a second later for a four-point contest.

Weikert's 3-pointer moved the Lightning to 65-64 with four seconds left and the Lightning had a chance after Anjelai Hayes missed twice from the line, giving the home side the ball with 1.5 seconds to go.  Sophomore Sarah Round (Northampton, England) got an open look just past midcourt following a long pass, but could not convert as time expired.

McGrogan ended with 20 points on 8-of-16 shooting and canned three 3-pointers.  She now is tied for seventh in team history with 94 career 3-pointers, tied for ninth with 374 career field goals and 10th overall with 115 career steals.

Weikert had 11 points and six rebounds, Harrison recorded nine and seven with senior Jill Latanowich (Newton, MA) scoring eight points for the Lightning (1-12, 1-4 CACC), who shot 58 percent (11-of-19) from the floor in the fourth quarter.

Elizabeth Radley was the story for Holy Family (8-5, 6-0), scoring 28 points on 11-of-18 shooting with six rebounds.  Ehling recorded 12 points and six rebounds with Moe Moore adding 10 and six.

Goldey-Beacom on Saturday plays at Post for a 1:00 pm game, which precedes the men's 3:00 pm contest.
