Game Recap: Women's Basketball |

Women’s Basketball Dealt 61-57 Loss at Caldwell

Goldey-Beacom was deadlocked with Caldwell into the waning minutes, but came up just short in a 61-57 Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference loss in Caldwell, NJ.

Goldey-Beacom in the first half limited Caldwell to just 36 percent shooting (11-of-31), but was down 30-26 at halftime.  Senior Amanda McGrogan (Mount Laurel, NJ) poured in nine points in the half, sophomore Sarah Round (Northampton, England) netted seven and senior Jill Latanowich (Newton, MA) added six rebounds.

The Lightning in the third quarter outscored the Cougars 19-11 for a 45-41 lead, shooting 46 percent (6-of-13) from the field and limiting the home side to just 22 percent (4-of-18).  McGrogan and Round netted six points apiece.

The tight-fought contest came down to the final three minutes with the score tied at 51.  The Lightning played great defense and many times forced the Cougars to force attempts with the shot clock near zero.  Tight defense again was displayed with 2:53 left, but Caldwell's Alessia Smaldone got off a 3-pointer just before the shot clock expired and nailed it for a 54-51 contest.

McGrogan's layup with 1:49 remaining got the Lightning within 54-53, but Tina Lebron answered with her own layup 17 seconds later for another three-point game.

McGrogan canned two free throws with 1:04 to play for a 56-55 contest and now the Lightning needed a stop.  Again the Lightning showed great defense, but Caldwell's Halle Brown responded on a 3-pointer with 39 seconds to go for a four-point contest.

Round made a layup with 19 seconds left for a 59-57 game, but Lebron made two from the line two seconds later for a four-point contest.

GBC now was in a two-possession game and needed a quick basket, but Round missed a 3-pointer that all but ended things.

McGrogan poured in 19 points to go with six assists, Round netted 15 points and Latanowich matched her career best with 10 rebounds for the Lightning (1-11, 1-3 CACC), who shot 40 percent (19-of-47) from the floor.

Smaldone was unbelievable with 26 points on 11-of-16 shooting and Tamrin Henderson added 10 rebounds for the Cougars (2-11, 2-3), who were held to just 34 percent shooting (22-of-65) but hit eight 3-pointers.

Goldey-Beacom returns home Wednesday to play Holy Family at 6:00 pm, which precedes the men's contest at 8:00 pm between the same schools.
