Women’s Basketball Handed 63-55 Loss at Jefferson

Goldey-Beacom made things interesting late against one of the area's perennial powers, but left East Falls with a 63-55 Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference loss at Jefferson in Philadelphia, PA.

Goldey-Beacom came out firing against the reigning CACC champion, going into halftime with a 32-28 lead by shooting 52 percent (14-of-27) from the field and limiting Jefferson to just 36 percent (12-of-33).  Alexis Harrison (Millville, NJ) scored 10 points on 5-of-5 shooting with fellow sophomore Sarah Round (Northampton, England) adding seven points.

The Rams grabbed the momentum in the third quarter, outscoring the Lightning 16-7 by shooting 64 percent (7-of-11) from the floor to go with forcing five turnovers for a 44-39 lead.  Allie Warren netted eight points in that time and Sabria Lytes added six.

The fourth quarter was close most of the way, especially when senior Amanda McGrogan (Mount Laurel, NJ) hit a layup with 4:06 left for a 54-48 deficit.

Then, following over two minutes of scoreless play, came what looked like would be a massive turning point with 1:25 remaining.  McGrogan was open in the right corner and canned a 3-pointer as she was fouled.  She missed the free throw, but still the Lightning had closed to 54-51.

GBC then needed a stop on the other end, but Jefferson would not allow.  The shot clock was running down and Warren took matters into her own hands, making a driving layup with 58 seconds left for a 56-51 game.

But a critical turnover for the Lightning gave the ball back to the Rams, who saw Lytes drill two from the stripe with 49 seconds to play for a 58-51 contest.  Another turnover benefitted Jefferson and this time it was Alynna Williams who canned a pair from the line with 46 seconds to go for a 60-51 margin.

Harrison closed with 16 points on 8-of-10 shooting, Round had 12 and six rebounds with McGrogan amassing 10 points along with a career-high-tying eight assists for GBC (1-14, 1-6 CACC), which shot 46 percent (23-of-50) from the field.

McGrogan moves into third place in school history with 292 career assists and seventh with 96 career 3-pointers.  She also becomes the 10th player in school history to reach 1,100 career points, moving to 1,107.

Williams poured in 20 points, Warren had 18 and eight rebounds with Lytes adding 13 points for the Rams (7-8, 4-3), who shot 39 percent (22-of-57) from the field.

Goldey-Beacom is home Saturday against Nyack as part of its "Welcome Back Games."  A pizza party will be held for all students with a valid GBC ID and halftime contests will take place for the students.  The women's game is at 1:00 pm and the men's contest is at 3:00 pm.
