Baseball Gains Split Against Concordia (NY) to End the Season



Goldey-Beacom in game two held on for an 11-9 victory over Concordia (NY) after it opened the Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference doubleheader with an 8-7 loss at Doyle Field in Hockessin, DE.
 
The Lightning in the first inning of game two raced to a 6-0 lead.  Things started with junior Justin Hill (Seaford, DE) cracking a leadoff homer and were highlighted by freshman Connor Megginson (Harbeson, DE) hitting the first grand slam in program history.
 
Five more runs were tacked on in the second for an 11-0 cushion.  Senior Brandon Abdul (Old Bridge, NJ), freshman Anthony DiMartino (Sicklerville, NJ) and junior Ivan Solis (La Chorrera, Panama) all had RBI hits before Megginson cracked a two-run homer.
 
Abdul ends the season with a school-record 16-game hitting streak and Megginson joins Solis with two homers in a game this year.  Megginson's six RBI also are a season high.
 
The Lightning took an 11-3 lead into the seventh and final inning before the Clippers made things very interesting.  Hermes Abreu had the big hit with a two-run double to make it 11-7 before a walk loaded the bases and brought the tying run to the plate.
 
But junior Brandon Ferrie (Royersford, PA) came in and got his first career save, recording the final two outs.
 
Derwood, MD sophomore Jake Heskett (3-3) got the victory, allowing just one hit and two walks over five innings with one strikeout.  Hill closed with three hits for the Lightning, who ended the third inning with a triple play.
 
Game one belonged to Concordia's Tyler Epple, who went 5-for-5 with five RBI and seemingly could do no wrong.  He cracked a three-run homer in the fifth to give the Clippers a 5-2 lead and his nine-inning single put them ahead, 8-7.
 
Epple's five hits are a record for the most in a college game at Doyle Field.
 
The Lightning (15-33, 14-18 CACC) were down 7-4 entering the last of the eighth before tying it.  Hill had an RBI double, sophomore Jeff Gillis (Hockessin, DE) scored on a fielder's choice and junior Cole Collins (Laurel, DE) tied it with a run-scoring single.
 
Collins ended with three hits.
 
Connor Stapleton (2-3) got the victory in relief for the Clippers (13-34, 8-24), despite allowing three runs and two hits over 2 2/3 innings with three walks.
 
Among the single-season school records broken this year for Goldey-Beacom included Hill with 54 hits and 127 assists, Solis with a .356 batting average and Megginson with seven home runs.
