Softball Splits a Pair With Chestnut Hill

Goldey-Beacom in game one used great all-around play to earn a 1-0 Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference triumph over Chestnut Hill before it was dealt a 3-2 loss in the nightcap at the Jackson Complex in Wilmington, DE.

Goldey-Beacom in game one got a great pitching performance from sophomore Taylor Beres (Middletown, DE), who yielded just four hits for her third shutout of the season.  She struck out three over seven innings with just two walks and only faced five batters above the minimum.

The Lightning made sure this outing would not go to waste with a run in the last of the third inning.  Sophomore Zoe Lockwood (Chesapeake City, MD) drew a one-out walk, took second on a single from freshman Braydee Whitman (Dagsboro, DE) and scored on a two-out single from senior Rachel Davis (Bethel, DE).

Beres made it stand by allowing just two baserunners over the final three innings.  Sophomore Ali Henriquez (Hoboken, NJ) closed with two hits.

After Lily Reid put Chestnut Hill ahead 1-0 in the second inning of game two on an RBI single, GBC took the lead in the last of the frame.  The home side loaded the bases with one out before junior pinch-hitter Jess Lusk (Victoria, BC) ripped a double to right field, plating two runs for a 2-1 lead.

But the Griffins took the lead for good in the third.  They loaded the bases with none out before Brielle Riotte lifted a sacrifice fly and Ariel Magee's groundout plated Devon Horner for the final.

Whitman and junior Kasey Goshorn (Salisbury, MD) had two hits apiece for the Lightning (9-35, 7-17 CACC).  Freshman Kaisey Reed (Milton, DE) pitched great, but allowed three runs and seven hits over seven innings.

Gabrielle Merryman gave up two runs and nine hits over seven innings for the Griffins (16-22, 11-13).  Alessandra Messina had two hits.

Goldey-Beacom on Saturday ends its season with a doubleheader at Concordia (NY), which begins at 1:00 pm.
