Goldey-Beacom splits with the University of the Sciences in a Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference match up in Wilmington, DE. The Lightning took game one in five innings, 8-0, and the Devils took game two, 8-5, in a tough nine inning battle.
In game one, Goldey-Beacom took an early lead in the bottom of the first inning and never looked back. Ali Henriquez (Hoboken, N.J.) hit a double RBI triple down the left line to get Goldey-Beacom's momentum going. Henriquez scored to put the Lightning up 3-0.
Goldey-Beacom went on to score five more runs with a double RBI by Kasey Goshen (Salisbury, Md.), a single RBI double by Henriquez, and a double RBI single by Jess Lusk (Victoria, B.C.). The Lighting took game one 8-0 in five innings.
Middletown, DE sophomore Taylor Beres (5-6) pitched all five innings with four strikeouts and did not give up any runs.
Game two was a constant battle between the Devils and the Lightning. Goldey-Beacom struck first in the bottom of the second inning when Braydee Whitman (Dagsboro, Del.) scored off a bad throw by the third baseman.
University of the Sciences equalized the game in the top of the fourth when Nina Cencetti hit a single RBI double to left center.
Goldey-Beacom retook the lead in the bottom of the fourth inning when Dianna Gatto (Jefferson, N.J.) reached on a fielders choice which allowed for Whitman to score.
The Devils now down 2-1 going into the top of the fifth inning. Gabrielle Simms hit a single RBI triple to right center to tie the game. Gina Pustizzi followed with double RBI single to right field which gave the University of the Sciences a 4-2 lead.
Despite being down 4-2 going into the bottom of the fifth inning, Lusk nails a double RBI double to center field and Henriquez scores off a throwing error by the center fielder. Goldey-Beacom now up 5-4.
Both teams continued to battle. The devils went on to score two more runs and the Lightning added another run to tie the game 6-6 after seven innings.
Neither teams scored in the eighth inning which forced the game to go to nine innings.
University of the Sciences struck first scoring two runs from a single RBI single by Pustizzi and another single RBI double by Kaitlyn Gaynor.
Goldey-Beacom despite having bases loaded at the bottom of the ninth were unable to get a run. The Devils took game two 8-6 after nine innings.
Gaynor (4-6) pitched all nine innings with eight strike outs and gave up six runs.
Goldey-Beacom is back in action on Wednesday in an out of conference doubleheader match up against East Stroudsburg at 2:30 pm in Wilmington, DE.
