Women’s Tennis Guts Its Way to 5-2 Triumph Over Slippery Rock

Goldey-Beacom intensified its resume for consideration into the NCAA Tournament, rallying for a 5-2 victory over Slippery Rock in a match of regionally ranked opponents in Wilmington, DE.

The Lightning found itself in a 1-0 hole after doubles. Goldey-Beacom did get a victory at third doubles, seeing junior Alma Garcia Valle (Valladolid, Spain) and freshman Kristin Radeke (Bremen, Germany) notching a 6-4 triumph over Lauren Fadden and Allie Welch.

Singles began with sophomore Catarina Zheng (Oporto, Portugal) winning by retirement at number two before junior Anna Hortelano Pey (Castelldefels, Spain) notched a 6-2, 6-4 victory at No. 5 singles over Fadden, leveling the tie at 2-2.

Radeke broke the tie with a thrilling 6-3, 7-5 win at sixth singles over Welch before freshman Elin Anderson (Conwy, Wales) clinched it at No. 3 singles, rallying for a 3-6, 7-5, 6-2 victory over Lois Page.

Garcia Valle ended it with a 2-6, 6-3, 6-4 triumph at No. 4 singles over Olivia Warner.

Goldey-Beacom (14-4) is ranked seventh in the East Region and Slippery Rock (11-7) is fifth in the Atlantic Region.

Goldey-Beacom now awaits if its will receive an at-large berth into the NCAA Tournament. The Lightning this season played in the Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference semifinals for an 11th straight year and notched a 5-2 victory April 2 over New York Tech, ranked No. 35 in the country and first in the East Region.

The selection show is May 7 at a time to be announced.
