Goldey-Beacom's female student-athletes once again took time to help take part in celebrating Women in Sport.

Many of the Lightning's student-athletes made their way to Baltz Elementary School, participating in a school-wide assembly where they were introduced to the student body.  The student-athletes then broke into groups and joined the students on their school day.  Some attended lunch, recess and participated in math/reading lessons with the students.

Just as in the past, the kids were able to speak to the student-athletes and answer any questions they had about being a collegiate athlete.  Goldey-Beacom also brought giveaways for the kids such as old equipment (basketballs, softballs and volleyballs) and t-shirts.  Once again, all of the student-athletes had a great experience.

All events were held just after the 33nd annual National Girls and Women in Sports Day.  The day is a national observance celebrating the extraordinary achievements of women and girls in sports.  It also celebrates the importance of fair play, building awareness about Title IX and working together toward its promise of equal opportunity in sports.

This was yet another example of the work through GBC Cares, the community service arm of the Department of Athletics.  Recent work includes, but is not limited to, work at The Summit in Hockessin with our veterans, the tennis team helping with Tennithon and the Delaware Wheelchair Tennis Championships, and the softball team helping with both the Thanksgiving collection for the New Castle County EMS Division Paramedics and Toys for Tots.

The works of GBC Cares in producing the soon-to-be-published book "Veterans of The Summit: Stories of Service" helped the College finish third for the 2019 NCAA Division II Award of Excellence, earning $1,000 for future community engagement events.  It is the second time in four years Goldey-Beacom has been a finalist for the award.
