Women’s Basketball Headed to CACC Tournament Following 73-69 Triumph Over Wilmington

Goldey-Beacom needed a late run and overcame some tense moments in clinching a spot in the Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference Tournament, 73-69 over Wilmington (DE) at the Jones Center in Wilmington, DE.

In a match-up with the fourth and final conference tournament spot from the CACC South Division on the line, it was Goldey-Beacom which secured its eighth trip to the tournament in the last 10 years.  GBC next Tuesday visits North Division champion Dominican (NY) in the quarterfinals at 7:30 pm in Orangeburg, NY.

Things did not look good with Wilmington holding a 66-59 lead with 5:31 remaining.  The Wildcats opened the period on an 8-5 run in which Nyree Grant scored six points.

Then the Lightning's comeback began with an 11-0 run over 4 1/2 minutes for a 70-66 lead with 58 seconds remaining.  Junior Amanda McGrogan (Mount Laurel, NJ) scored seven points in that span and freshman Alexis Harrison (Millville, NJ) ended it with a layup.

Then came a critical juncture in which Kiara Eubanks hit a layup for Wilmington with 45 seconds left and was fouled.  However, the Wildcats were hit with a massive technical foul that altered the momentum.  After Eubanks converted an old-fashioned three-point play, McGrogan hit 1-of-2 from the line for a 71-69 margin.

The Lightning (13-15, 9-10 CACC) then got the ball, but committed a turnover and possession went to the visitors.  Emily Ansah looked to tie it as she drove to the hoop, but she missed and senior Tanner Turner-Rush (Harrisburg, PA) got the rebound.

McGrogan was fouled with 24 seconds left and hit the first free throw for a 72-69 margin.  She missed the second, but sophomore Alanna Speaks (Dover, DE) grabbed a big offensive rebound and the ball ended up in the hands of junior Jill Latanowich (Newton, MA).  After missing the first free throw, Latanowich canned the second with 18 seconds to play for a four-point contest.

The Wildcats now were faced with a two-possession situation, but Jadyn Whitsitt missed a 3-pointer which all but ended things.

McGrogan again had a day, ending with 26 points on 10-of-18 shooting and going 6-for-9 from the line over 31 minutes.  It is the 10th time this season she has scored at least 20 points.

Freshman Sarah Round (Northampton, England) netted 14 points, Turner-Rush scored 13, Harrison netted 12 and Speaks hauled in 12 rebounds.

Grant had 20 points and 15 rebounds, Eubanks amassed 17 points with Whitsett and Macy Robinson netting 13 apiece for the Wildcats (8-19, 8-11), who shot 39 percent (27-of-70) from the floor and entered having won three of their last four contests.
