Men’s Basketball Secures Home Game With 92-85 Victory Over Wilmington

Senior Corey Taite (Sayreville, NJ) scored 35 points and broke two more career school records for Goldey-Beacom, which clinched a home game in the Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference Tournament with a 92-85 victory over Wilmington (DE) at the Jones Center in Wilmington, DE.

GBC (14-14, 12-7 CACC) locked up second place in the CACC South Division and will host Caldwell in the quarterfinals next Tuesday at 6:00 pm.  It is the Lightning's third straight trip to the conference tournament and the first time they will host a quarterfinal in consecutive years since doing so four straight times from 2009-12.

Even though Wilmington did not lead since it was 5-4 in the first 2 1/2 minutes, the lead in the second half for GBC did not exceed nine points.  It was a tightly contested matchup which could have gone either way, but the Lightning came through by shooting 50 percent (13-of-26) from the field in the second half and 19-for-20 from the line.

Goldey-Beacom scored five straight points to gain an 80-74 lead with 2:31 left, keyed by Taite's big 3-pointer.  Wilmington got within 80-77 on Jermaine Head's triple, but Taite nailed two free throws with 1:37 to play for a five-point margin.

Thomas Farrior made a layup with 1:13 remaining for the Wildcats to make it 82-79, but Lightning freshman Giovanni Jones (Norfolk, VA) followed suit with 48 seconds to play for a five-point game.  Farrior again hit a layup with 37 seconds to go for an 84-81 contest, but sophomore Kyle Elliot (Rahway, NJ) canned two free throws with 30 seconds left for another five-point margin.

The Wildcats would not go away as Head's layup with 25 seconds remaining made it 86-83.  Taite again came through with two free throws three seconds later for an 88-83 margin.  After Head's layup with 17 seconds left, the Lightning finally put things on ice with Taite getting two more from the line two seconds later for a 90-85 margin.

Taite fell just shy of his season-best 37 points from February 9 against Post and reached at least 20 points for the 12th time this season.  He shot 9-of-15 from the floor and, one game after going 16-for-16 from the line against Georgian Court, went 13-for-13 from the stripe.  Taite has made his last 29 free throw attempts.

Taite's four 3-pointers gives him a team-record 205 career and his four assists gives him 368, also a program best.  He already has the school record with 1,755 points, 458 free throws and 546 field goals.

Elliot netted 22 points and Jones added 11 for the Lightning, who overall shot 51 percent (29-of-57) from the field and 26-for-29 from the stripe.

Head recorded 26 points and 10 rebounds, Farrior amassed 21 and 14, Alvin West netted 12 points with Jordan Harding and Danny Walsh scoring 10 apiece for the Wildcats (12-16, 9-10).
