Goldey-Beacom earned a pair of wins with Emily Lozowski (Marlton, N.J.) lining an RBI single to take game two in nine innings. The Lightning beat Holy Family 9-2 in game one and 10-9 in game two in their Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference opener in Wilmington, DE.
In game one, Goldey-Beacom took the lead in the bottom of the first with a RBI double by Kasey Goshorn (Salisbury, Md.). Holy Family battled back in the top of the third with a RBI double to center field by Sam Klem.
Goldey-Beacom and Holy Family remained tied 1-1 going into the bottom of the third. The Lightning went ahead at the bottom of the third and never looked back. Goshorn hit an RBI sacrifice fly to put the Lightning up 2-1.
In the bottom of the fourth the Lightning took off scoring five runs to go ahead 7-1. Goldey-Beacom went on to win 9-2 in game one.
Zoe Lockwood (Chesapeake City, Md.) and Braydee Whitman (Dagsboro, Del.) both went 2-for-3 with two runs each for Goldey-Beacom in game one.
Heather Bogardus and Klem both went 2-for-4 with two hits for Holy Family in game one.
Taylor Beres (Middletown, Del.) pitched five innings and only allowed five hits and two runs.
In game two, Holy Family took an early lead going up 4-0 in the top of the first. Madelyn Yeager's two RBI triple to center field put the Tigers up 2-0. Abigail Smith followed with a single RBI and scored off of a fielding error to put Holy Family up 4-0.
The Lighting battled back in the bottom of the first scoring five runs to put the Goldey-Beacom up 5-4. Goshorn hit a two RBI double down right field, Whitman singled to right center for a single RBI, Jess Lusk (Victoria, B.C.) hit a single RBI double to center field and Kaisey Reed (Milton, Del.) hit single to right field.
Holy Family was down 5-4 until Taylor Nichols hit a RBI single to left field. Elaina Hansen hit a two RBI single to centerfield to put the Tigers ahead 7-5 at the top of the second inning.
Beres' RBI single down the right-field line gave the Lightning the equalizer, 7-7, at the bottom of the seventh inning. Goldey-Beacom and Holy Family remained tied 7-7 to go into extra innings. Neither team scored in the eighth inning, helped in part by a fantastic catch from Goldey-Beacom junior Kylie Quirk (Newark, DE) which pushed the game to nine innings.
In the ninth inning, the last player who received an out in the eighth inning is placed on second base to start the inning. Holy Family went on two score two runs in the top of the ninth inning to go ahead 9-7.
Despite being down by two in the bottom of the ninth, the Lightning never gave up. Beres was walked to make bases loaded with one out. Dianna Gatto (Jefferson, N.J.) reached on a fielding error allowing Whitman to score and bases remained loaded. The Lightning were down 9-8 when Lockwood reached on a fielding error which allowed for Beres to score to tie the game 9-9.
Holy Family was looking to get the final out when Lozowski was up to bat. Lozowski hit an RBI single up the middle which propelled the Lightning ahead of Holy Family 10-9 to win game two.
Beres (3-3) got the win for the Lightning pitching two innings with two strike outs and only allowing two runs.
Goldey-Beacom is back in action on Friday for a doubleheader against Caldwell at 2PM in Wilmington, DE.
