Softball Takes Two From Mansfield

Goldey-Beacom finally made its way back on the field and it was worth the wait, notching victories of 7-6 and 9-1 over Mansfield at the Jackson Complex in Wilmington, DE.

Playing its first contests in exactly four weeks over a stretch that featured six postponed or canceled games, Goldey-Beacom came through with a pair of walk-off triumphs.

The Lightning in game one got four runs in the last of the fifth inning for a 6-3 lead.  Maddie Godwin (Cinnaminson, NJ) scored on a muffed throw, fellow freshman Braydee Whitman (Dagsboro, DE) lifted an RBI fielder's choice and a grounder from junior Jess Lusk (Victoria, BC) resulted in a run-scoring fielder's choice.

One strike from victory in the seventh, GBC could not nail it down as Devin Jones blasted a three-run double to center field for a 6-6 tie.

But the Lightning avoided extra time by winning in the last of the frame.  Whitman lined a one-out single to center and scored when Lusk's single was misplayed for a game-ending error.

Whitman closed with two hits and two RBI.  Middletown, DE sophomore Taylor Beres (1-3) struck out seven over seven innings, allowing six runs and nine hits.

Joelle Snyder ended with three hits for the Mounties.

Goldey-Beacom (2-6) in the second game plated seven runs in the last of the sixth to win via the run rule.  Junior Dianna Gatto (Jefferson, NJ) and sophomore Zoe Lockwood (Chesapeake City, MD) each had two-run singles in the frame with junior Kasey Goshorn (Salisbury, MD) ending it on an RBI single for her third RBI of the doubleheader.

Lockwood, Gatto and Goshorn all had two hits and two RBI in the nightcap with freshman Emily Lozowski (Marlton, NJ) also getting two hits.  Milton, DE freshman Kaisey Reed (1-0) ended with her first collegiate win, striking out three and permitting just one unearned run and five hits.

Arianna Young (1-1) struck out three over 5 1/3 innings, allowing just two earned runs for Mansfield (6-4).  Alli McGovern ended with two hits.

Today featured a matchup in which both teams had played all of their prior games this season in Myrtle Beach, SC.

Goldey-Beacom opens Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference play at home Tuesday against Holy Family.  First pitch is at 2:30 pm.
