Goldey-Beacom once again got solid play up and down the board in beginning the spring campaign with a 6-1 victory over Division I Delaware State at the remodeled Delcastle Tennis Center in Wilmington, DE.

The Lightning (9-2) got things off right by capturing the doubles point for the 10th time this season.  Sophomores Lotte Lesscher y Post (Arnhem, Netherlands) and Catarina Zheng (Oporto, Portugal) rolled to a 6-2 win at first doubles over Sofia Rachi and Anastasia Belkina before junior Silvia Hortelano Pey (Castelldefels, Spain) and Maria Bruno (Maracay, Venezuela) recorded a 6-4 triumph at No. 2 doubles vs. Cassandra Boltman and Aayushi Chouhan.  Junior Alma Garcia Valle (Valladolid, Spain) and freshman Kristin Radeke (Bremen, Germany) were in a battle at third doubles before getting a 6-5 (7-0) victory over Akina Polyvana and Yelyzaeta Bessonova.

Zheng was the first to win her singles match, recording a 6-1, 7-5 triumph at No. 2 singles over Belkina before Lesscher y Post amassed a 6-4, 6-2 victory at first singles over Rachi for a 3-0 GBC lead.  Junior Anna Hortelano Pey (Castelldefels, Spain) helped make it 4-1 and clinch the tie with a 3-6, 6-0, 6-3 win over Polyvana.

Freshman Andrea Fresneda (Valencia, Spain) posted a 6-0, 3-6, 6-3 victory at No. 5 singles over Bessonova before Garcia Valle recorded a 7-6 (7-3), 3-6, 1-0 (10-5) win over Polyvana from the Hornets (3-5) at fourth singles.

Goldey-Beacom, ranked seventh in the East Region, was playing its first match in the new indoor facility at Delcastle.  The complex has been home of the two-time Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference champion and seven-time NCAA Tournament participant for over a decade.

It is the Lightning's first victory over a Division I foe since a 4-3 triumph over the Hornets on March 7, 2014.

This is one of two matches this spring for the Lightning against Division I foes.  Goldey-Beacom hosts Delaware next Saturday at noon.

Before that, GBC visits West Chester for its lone scheduled road match of the spring.  First serve is at 4:00 pm.
