Game Recap: Women's Basketball |

Women’s Basketball Notches 55-50 Triumph Over Post

Goldey-Beacom went on a scoring tear in the third quarter and held on late to thrill its home fans with a big 55-50 Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference win over Post at the Jones Center in Wilmington, DE.

The Lightning outscored the Eagles 24-12 in the third quarter by shooting 53 percent (8-of-15) from the floor and the defense did its part, allowing just 23 percent (5-of-22).  Freshman Alexis Harrison (Millville, NJ) continued her solid play in the post with seven points, junior Amanda McGrogan (Mount Laurel, NJ) netted six points and senior Tanner Turner-Rush (Harrisburg, PA) added five.

Post then came out of nowhere with a 15-2 run over the first 7 1/2 minutes of the fourth quarter, closing to 51-50 with 2:28 remaining.  Gabriela Middleton scored eight points in that time.

Freshman Sarah Round (Northampton, England) hit a jumper with 2:09 to go that gave GBC a 53-50 lead.  Then came the big play when Post's Katelyn Canlas drove to the basketball, but her pass was knocked away by sophomore Alanna Speaks (Dover, DE) that led to a huge turnover.

Harrison then made a free throw with 66 seconds left for a 54-50 margin that all but ended things, giving Goldey-Beacom its 11 victory in its last 13 games against Post.

Harrison again was a huge factor with season bests of 17 points and 14 rebounds for her third double-double of the season, all within the last four contests.  McGrogan and Round poured in 11 points apiece, Speaks hauled in eight rebounds and junior Jill Latanowich (Newton, MA) added seven.

Round also canned three 3-pointers to give her 55, the seventh-best single-season total in program history.

Middleton poured in 16 points, Mia Crooms netted 15 and Jessica DeGree grabbed 14 rebounds for the Eagles (10-12, 6-8 CACC), who shot just 27 percent (17-of-63) from the floor.

Goldey-Beacom (12-11, 8-6 CACC), winners of three straight, holds a 2 1/2-game lead over Holy Family (5-8) and Wilmington for the fourth and final conference tournament spot from the CACC South Division.

Goldey-Beacom next Wednesday visits nationally ranked Jefferson for a 6:00 pm game in East Falls.  The men's contest between the same schools follows at 8:00 pm.
