Game Recap: Men's Basketball |

Men’s Basketball Handed 84-68 Loss by Holy Family

Goldey-Beacom nearly made a huge second-half comeback, but that fell short in an 84-68 Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference loss to Holy Family at the Jones Center in Wilmington, DE.

The Tigers raced to a 31-20 halftime lead thanks to holding the Lightning to just 23 percent shooting (8-of-35) and 2-of-12 from 3-point range.  Patrick Robinson scored eight points in the half with Vincenzo Dalessandro adding five.

Holy Family widened the margin in the second half, using a 43-28 run over the first 14 minutes to gain a 74-48 cushion.  Robinson again was a force with 12 points, Kharon Randolph netted 11 and Dumir Montague added 10.

The Lightning refused to back off, scoring the next 14 points in just over two minutes for a 74-62 deficit with 3:56 to go.  Freshman Giovanni Jones (Norfolk, VA), the reigning CACC Defensive Player of the Week, and senior Corey Taite (Sayreville, NJ) scored five points apiece.

But Holy Family ended the contest on a 10-6 spurt, getting four points from Randolph, to sweep the season series.

Senior Mahir Johnson (Chester, PA) scored 19 points, Taite netted 16 with Jones adding 14 and a team-season-high 16 rebounds for his third double-double of the season.  This helped GBC shoot 43 percent (18-of-42) from the field in the second half, but just 34 percent (26-of-77) for the game.

Robinson had 22 points and nine rebounds, Randolph poured in 20 points, Dalessandro amassed 15 and 10 rebounds with Montague adding 15 points for the Tigers, who shot 44 percent (24-of-54) from the floor.

Goldey-Beacom (10-12, 8-5 CACC) and Holy Family (11-7, 7-4) sit in a virtual tie for second place in the CACC South Division.  The top two teams in each of the two division host a conference quarterfinal game.

The game was part of Mental Health Awareness Night, an initiative taken by the NCAA and all 14 CACC schools.  Mental health awareness recently has become a high priority among NCAA and Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference institutions.  Medical problems usually have a psychological or emotional consequence such as eating disorders and substance-related problems.  Student-athletes who suffer depression increase their risk of injury as the mind and body affect one another.

Goldey-Beacom is back home Saturday as part of "Hoop It Up" to face Post at 6:00 pm.  The women's game between the same teams precedes it at 4:00 pm.
