Game Recap: Men's Basketball |

Men’s Basketball Makes it Three Straight with 86-77 Triumph Over the District of Columbia

Blistering shooting and balanced scoring were the story as Goldey-Beacom used an early lead for its third straight victory, 86-77 over the District of Columbia at the Jones Center in Wilmington, DE.

The Lightning were buoyed by a 22-11 run midway through the first half, turning a tie game into a 31-20 lead with 3:41 to go.  Junior Kyle Elliot (Rahway, NJ), the reigning Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference Player of the Week, and freshman Nazim Derry (Atlantic City, NJ) scored six points apiece with junior J'von Winslow (Allentown, PA) ending it on a jumper.

The half ended with drama and all the momentum going the Lightning's way.  Derry hit a layup with nine seconds left, stole the ball in the backcourt and then drilled a deep 3-pointer at the buzzer to give his side a 45-32 cushion.

Goldey-Beacom (3-5) in the opening half shot 58 percent (18-of-31) from the field and canned four 3-pointers.  Derry scored 12 points on 5-of-6 shooting with Elliot adding 12, going 5-of-9 from the floor.

The second half saw the Firebirds creep within 75-68 with 3:38 left after Jahmir Marable Williams hit two free throws.  But junior Tyler Jones (Lawrenceville, NJ) canned a 3-pointer with three minutes to go and Derry added a jumper with 2:17 remaining for an 80-68 GBC lead, clinching the first game in three all-time meetings that did not need overtime.

Elliot continued his torrid play with 23 points on 7-of-12 shooting along with going 8-for-10 from the line.  Derry netted a season-best 23 points on 9-of-16 shooting to go with eight rebounds and five steals, Winslow poured in a season-best 14 points on 5-of-7 shooting and freshman Jesiah West (Elizabeth, NJ) added 11 points, five rebounds and four emphatic blocks.

Goldey-Beacom overall shot 55 percent (31-of-56) from the floor and held UDC to 42 percent (15-of-36).

Kerry Kirkwood netted 16 points, Aaren Smith had 14 and eight rebounds with Zachary Olukanni adding 12 and seven for the Firebirds (4-5).

Goldey-Beacom on Saturday begins play in the CACC at Chestnut Hill.  The game begins at 3:00 pm and follows the women's contest between the same schools at 1:00 pm.
