Game Recap: Women's Basketball |

Women’s Basketball Prevails, 70-69, Over Wilmington

Goldey-Beacom received big contributions on offense, clutch play on defense and great overall teamwork in battling to a 70-69 Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference victory over Wilmington at the Jones Center in Wilmington, DE.

GBC looked like it was in great shape with 3:47 left when sophomore Sarah Round (Northampton, England) drilled a huge 3-pointer to give her side a 68-61 lead.  But Wilmington chipped away, moving to 68-63 with 2:22 remaining on Kiara Eubanks' jumper and then got to a three-point game with 1:52 to go on Kasha Andrews' layup.

The Lightning called timeout to regroup and senior Amanda McGrogan (Mount Laurel, NJ), as she always does, came through.  She came out of the break with the ball and drove in for a layup with 1:36 remaining for a 70-65 game.

Eubanks hit a jumper to get the Wildcats to 70-67 with 1:21 remaining and, following a Lightning miss, canned a jumper with 42 seconds to go for a one-point contest.

Another Goldey-Beacom miss then put the ball in Wilmington's hands in the frontcourt with eight seconds left.  The Wildcats worked the ball in the post and it was Sabreen Muslin who was fouled in the paint with 4.1 seconds remaining.

With the crowd in anticipation, Muslin misfired on both free throws.  But the second deflected out of bounds off the Lightning (1-9, 1-2 CACC) and the Wildcats (0-10, 0-3) had had another chance with 2.1 seconds left.

However, Goldey-Beacom's defense came through.  Round and freshman Janiya Stevens (Ellendale, DE) showed relentless play in both moving to Muslim, who took the inbounds pass from under the basket and saw her short jumper miss at the buzzer.

McGrogan closed with 25 points to match her season high on 8-of-16 shooting, eight rebounds, five assists and went 8-for-10 from the line.  Round netted 14 points, senior Jill Latanowich (Newton, MA) scored 10 with sophomore Alexis Harrison (Millville, NJ) getting seven and eight rebounds for the Lightning.

Eubanks played great with 23 points on 10-of-15 shooting, Andrews had 15 and seven rebounds with Jadyn Whitsett pouring in 10 points for the Wildcats.

Goldey-Beacom returns to action Thursday, January 2 at New Haven, beginning at 5:30 pm.
