Men’s Basketball Dealt Tough 92-86 Overtime Loss at Bridgeport



Goldey-Beacom was in front for a lion's share of the contest, but could not hold on in a season-opening 92-86 overtime loss at Bridgeport in Bridgeport, CT.
 
Goldey-Beacom, which led by as many as 14 in the opening half, went into the locker room with a 41-35 cushion by shooting 62 percent (16-of-26) from the field with six 3-pointers.  Junior J'von Winslow (Allentown, PA) scored 13 points on 4-of-6 shooting with four 3-pointers and freshman Nazim Derry (Atlantic City, NJ) netted 11 points on 5-of-6 shooting for the Lightning.
 
GBC led 66-56 with 7:09 left in regulation, but Bridgeport went on a 14-4 run in just under five minutes for a 70-70 tie.  Travis Robinson-Morgan scored seven points in that time for the Purple Knights.
 
Junior Marcellus Livingston (Linden, NJ) canned a huge 3-pointer with 1:22 remaining to give the Lightning a 74-70 lead.  But John Middleton made a layup with 64 seconds left and Bakary Camara drilled two free throws with 20 seconds to go, sending things to overtime.
 
Bridgeport controlled the extra session after never leading in regulation.  Robinson-Morgan made 1-of-2 from the line with 2:34 left for a 79-78 Bridgeport lead and D'Vonne Trumbo added a layup with 2:19 to go for a three-point margin.
 
The cushion widened with 1:40 left when Trumbo hit another free throw and things all but ended on Robinson-Morgan's two free throws with 78 seconds to play for an 84-78 margin.
 
Livingston closed with 21 points and 11 rebounds, freshman Jesiah West (Elizabeth, NJ) had 16 and 10, Winslow poured in 13 points and Derry added 11 and eight assists for the Lightning (0-1), who shot 51 percent (30-of-59) from the floor but 49 percent (17-for-35) from the line.
 
Middleton poured in 21 points off the bench, Hashem Abbas netted 15, Robinson-Morgan scored 14, Camara had 13 and 11 rebounds with Trumbo adding 13 points for the Purple Knights (1-0), who shot 33 percent (28-of-85) from the field and 70 percent (30-for-43) from the stripe.
 
Goldey-Beacom on Sunday is back in Bridgeport to face Southern Connecticut State.  Game time is at 11:00 am.
