Women’s Basketball Handed 70-55 Loss by No. 20 Saint Thomas Aquinas

Goldey-Beacom once again ran into a formidable foe and gave its best, but was dealt a 70-55 loss by 20th-ranked Saint Thomas Aquinas at the Jones Center in Wilmington, DE.

The Lightning were in the contest most of the way, closing to a 47-40 deficit with 2:46 left in the third quarter after sophomore Alexis Harrison (Millville, NJ) hit a layup.

But the Spartans gained control with a 14-7 spurt bridging the final two periods, opening a 61-47 lead with 5:22 left.  Zaria Thomas netted five points in that time, helping her unit shoot 4-of-6 from the field.

Sophomore Sarah Round (Northampton, England) poured in a season-best 19 points on 7-of-11 shooting with five 3-pointers for the Lightning (0-4), who shot 54 percent (6-of-11) from the field in the third quarter and 42 percent (19-of-45) overall.

Senior Amanda McGrogan (Mount Laurel, NJ) netted 12 points to go with four assists.  She now stands at 985 career points, still the 10th-best total in program history.

Melissa Sadler had 21 points and 11 rebounds, Zaria Thomas netted 18 points with Ruth Adams getting 17 and 10 rebounds for the Spartans (7-0), who shot 56 percent (5-of-9) from the floor in the fourth period and 41 percent (24-of-58) overall.

Goldey-Beacom is off until next Wednesday, when it visits Bridgeport for a 5:00 pm contest.
