In a battle for first place in the Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference, Goldey-Beacom fought to the end but was handed a 4-3 loss by Concordia (NY) at Delcastle Tennis Center in Wilmington, DE.

The matchup between two of the elite teams in the nation and familiar foes proved to be an exciting battle.  These squads met three times last season with Concordia winning in the CACC semifinals and Goldey-Beacom prevailing in the first round of the NCAA Tournament.

GBC today found itself down 1-0 after doubles despite senior Alma Garcia Valle (Valladolid, Spain) and freshman Sara Edebo (Gothenburg, Sweden) getting a 6-4 triumph at second doubles over Paula Palero and Ebba Rosberg.

The Clippers' lead grew to 3-0 after the first two singles matches with Ebba Rosberg winning at first singles and Josefina Martin getting the victory at No. 3 singles.  Senior Anna Hortelano Pey (Castelldefels, Spain) got the Lightning within 3-1 at sixth singles with a 7-6 (8-6), 7-5 triumph over Alexandra Dumitrescu.

Sophomore Imane Van Veen (Paris, France) continued to make things interesting for GBC, recording a 7-6 (7-4), 6-4 win at second singles over Angelica Hantzis to move to home side within 3-2.  But Concordia clinched things at fourth singles with Palero getting a 3-6, 6-4, 6-4 win.

Garcia Valle brought the match to its conclusion with a 6-4, 6-7 (3-7), 6-3 win at fifth singles over Ann Wirlitsch.

The loss was just the second for Goldey-Beacom in its last 33 CACC regular-season matches.

Concordia (9-0, 7-0 CACC) moves into sole possession of first place in the league with Goldey-Beacom (7-1, 7-1) and University of the Sciences (6-1) tied for second in the loss column.  The top two teams get a first-round bye in the six-team CACC Tournament.

Goldey-Beacom on Tuesday ends its regular season at Chestnut Hill.  Match time in Philadelphia, PA is at 2:30 pm.
