Women’s Tennis Opens Season With 7-0 Rout at Millersville

Goldey-Beacom used a combination of experience and youth in rolling to a 7-0 season-opening victory at Millersville in Millersville, PA.
 
The Lightning (1-0) wasted no time in doubles with two wins to take the point.  Junior Silvia Hortelano Pey (Castelldefels, Spain) and freshman Maria Bruno (Maracay, Venezuela) got a 6-0 win over Sophie May and Corinne Grohaski at second doubles with freshmen Kristin Radeke (Bremen, Germany) and Andrea Fresneda (Valencia, Spain) posting a 6-1 triumph at No. 3 doubles over Megan Rovenolt and Victoria Hanus.
 
Lotte Lesscher y Post (Arnhem, Netherlands) got a 6-3, 6-1 win at first singles over Katina Jones, fellow sophomore Catarina Zheng (Oporto, Portugal) rolled to a 6-1, 6-3 triumph at No. 2 singles over Jasmine Morris and Bruno got a 6-1, 6-1 victory at third singles over Rovenolt.  Junior Anna Hortelano Pey (Castelldefels, Spain) posted a 6-0, 6-1 win at fourth singles over Kelsey Heckert, senior Manuela Cornejo (Quito, Ecuador) recorded a 6-1, 6-3 triumph at No. 5 singles over May with Fresneda getting a 6-1, 6-1 win at sixth singles over Grohaski.
 
Goldey-Beacom is the two-time reigning Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference champion and last season competed in the NCAA Tournament for the seventh time in school history.  The Lightning closed the season ranked 32nd in the country, received a first-round bye in the NCAA Tournament for the first time in team history and competed in the second round for a third time in the last four years.  GBC also entered the NCAA Tournament ranked first in the East Region.
 
Goldey-Beacom next Wednesday play its league opener against Chestnut Hill, starting at 3:30 pm at the Delcastle Tennis Center in Wilmington.  GBC has won 17 straight regular-season league matches dating to 2015.
