Baseball Heads to CACC Tournament Thanks to 17-3 Win at Jefferson

In just its second season since the reinstitution of the program, Goldey-Beacom emphatically clinched a spot in the Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference Tournament by rolling to a 17-3 victory at Jefferson in Philadelphia, PA.

Goldey-Beacom (19-27-1, 17-15) got it done down the stretch by winning five of its last eight contests to clinch the fourth seed in the South Division.  It is off to the single-elimination first round on Saturday at 2:00 pm to play at the North Division champion.  That champion is to be determined with a slew of make-up games in that half still to be played.

In a contest which saw the winner advance to the conference tournament and loser eliminated, it was Goldey-Beacom that made the first statement with seven runs in the top of the first inning.  Seniors Raul Perez-Duran (Trenton, NJ) and Edwin Lee (La Plata, MD) had the key blows in the frame with each getting an RBI double.

If that was not enough, the Lightning matched that total in the top of the second for a 14-0 cushion.  Seniors Jason Rowe (West Hills, CA) and Jay Smith (Zeeland, MI) each had RBI doubles with Lee and junior Calvin Clark (Millville, NJ) getting run-scoring singles.

Goldey-Beacom just fell shy of its school record for most runs.  It plated 19 runs March 26 against Caldwell.

What can not be lost is another outstanding pitching performance from Wilmington, DE freshman Trevor Jump (5-4).  The Mount Pleasant High School graduate won for the fifth time in his last eight decisions, yielding just two runs and six hits over six innings with four strikeouts.

Lee had three hits and two RBI, Rowe amassed three hits, Smith notched two hits and two RBI with sophomore Brandon Hanson (Bayonne, NJ) getting two hits.

Gunnar Hayes (3-5) faced just 10 batters and only tossed two-thirds of an inning, surrendering seven runs – four earned – and four hits for the Rams (18-28, 15-17).  Timothy Brodhag recorded two hits.
