Beres’ Two-Run Single Gives Softball a Split vs. Jefferson

Freshman Taylor Beres (Middletown, DE) lined a two-out, two-run single in the last of the sixth inning to give Goldey-Beacom a 2-1 Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference victory in game two of its doubleheader with Jefferson at the Jackson Complex in Wilmington, DE.

Jefferson notched a 4-1 triumph in the opener.

With GBC trailing 1-0 entering the sixth, freshman Zoe Lockwood (Chesapeake City, MD) drew a leadoff walk and took second on an infield single from senior Autumn Hollis (Elkton, MD).  Jefferson ace pitcher Stephanie Pepper was inserted in the circle and got the next two batters out.  But Beres came on as a pinch-hitter and roped one inside the left-field line to plate both runners.

Tower City, PA senior Kylie Doyle (2-9) came on in relief for the win, allowing just one hit over three scoreless frames.

Emily Bradley (1-3) was responsible for the runners, getting tagged for two runs and two hits over five innings for Rams.

Jefferson took the lead for good in the fifth when Jovanna Alfonsi's one-out grounder was misplayed, allowing Erica D'Angelo to score for a 2-1 game.  Courtney Wensel added an RBI groundout later in the frame and recorded another in the seventh for the final.

Emily Williams had three hits with D'Angelo and Alfonsi getting two apiece for the Rams (14-18, 10-10 CACC).  Pepper (8-6) struck out seven over seven innings, yielding one run and three hits.

Senior Lauren Conway (Hammonton, NJ) roped two hits and Doyle allowed three runs – one earned – and three hits over three innings for the Lightning (3-26, 3-17).

Goldey-Beacom is on the road Saturday to battle Caldwell in a noon doubleheader.
